I would like to put together a plan over the summer that will keep her in learning mode. We tend to get caught up in the swimming, play dates and summer camps and don't do as much exercise with the brain that we should. I would like to change things up this summer and still make it seem fun. Do any of you moms have some ideas or suggestions on how to incorporate learning into the summer with a splash of fun?

  1. summer is for FUN not learning!!!! shesh

  2. Take her places like the musuem and the zoo, places where there are educational things and teach her about them. Read her the plaques and what they say (or have her read them to you)

Also, what about enrolling her in a term of summer school?

  3. You could practice math facts and spelling words while in the car on the way to other activities. She could also read the street signs.

  4. The best thing you can do is reading.  Also play some card games, to help with adding and subtracting.  But the ultimate keep reading every night.  10-15 minuets is all she should need.

  5. Most libraries have summer reading programs you can sign her up for.  They usually have prizes or drawings for those who do it.   Maybe try to find some good computer games she can play that incorporate learning too or websites.

  6. What my mom does is everyday of the summer I have to do at least one page of the 5 or 6 workbooks she gets me. If I have lots of time I do 4 but if its a busy day I at least have to do one. I also like computer games that help me learn. I hope this helped and have a safe and fun summer!

  7. My best advice would be to buy a leapfrog leapster, they are very intertaining and educational.  The hardware runs for about $50 and the software is probably about $15 a game.  This can keep your child occupied during the car trips to and from these places.

  8. I like the zoo and museum idea.

My daughter will be in the 2nd grade too and she loves to read. Maybe you can take her to the bookstore every couple weeks to pick up a new book. My daughter loves the Junie B. Jones ones. Maybe your daughter would like them too?

  9. DONT OVERLOAD OR SHE WILL GET REALLY AGGRAVATED when school does start back in fall, they need the summer to kind of relax and have fun. What you are going do is make her hate school!!!

  10. The Zoo is soo much for for kids and they can learn a lot of different things there also other things such as the museum and also many of the local community colleges offer very cheap classes for all sorts of things i have my daughter in ceramics and the age does vary but they have for all ages. Also something that little girls love is gymnastics it is soo much fun for the kids my daughter loved it

  11. the most important thing is to have her read atleast 20-30 minutes everyday. have her retell the story to you, main characters, and setting. you can use flash card for adding and subtracting(second grade teacher don't like the kids to count on their fingers) cooking with receipes helps with math as well as following directions.. you can get some workbooks.

when your in the pool you can play games with math spelling or anything. when you go to the store have her count change or say i have $5.00  milk is $4.28 do i have enough to buy it.

there are so many ways to let your child have fun while learning .

  12. I would just like to say that it sounds like what you are doing is fine! Other activities are just as important. It's nice to take a break over the holidays.

  13. well you could start by saying something like lets go swimming today. when you get to the pool you tell her if it took 13 minutes to get here and we will swim for 1 hour 30 minutes how long will we be gone from home. or like for the playdate you could put together a plate of cheese and crakers. but before they can take one they have to help you read a story. on the drive to summer camp try spelling. you think of a word such as dog or cat and see how well they can spell it. if that is fun to them try playing the letter game. this sis how you play. as you are driving your child looks atr the signs. you start at a and you go to z.in order of the alphabet. but the letters must be found on a sign. you can always skip one letter. i usually pick to skip q. that has kept me and my family happy on a lot of car rides!!!!!!!
