My daughter is 20 months old and started with a cough a couple of days ago. She also has a runny nose. She was seen by the dr this morning and he said she was ok just a virus. She is now breathing about 20 breathes per minute and breathing hard. Is this something I should be concerned abou. She doesnt have a fever with this right now.

  1. aww :/

  2. Any time your child is breathing hard you should absolutely be concerned. Nobody knows their child better than the parent. I highly suggest taking your child to the ER, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Since she doesn't have a fever (which is one reason kids breathe fast) something else is making her work so hard. Is she wheezing? If you take her shirt off and look at her chest, is she using all of her accessory muscles, including her shoulders to help her breathe? If so, than she is working way too hard and is going to tire out... take her in.. Good luck!!

  3. i would take her back to the doc, it might have began as a virus but it could have turned into an infection.

if the breathing is really hard i would take her to an after hours place or the er. better safe than sorry

  4. Babies are usually using their nose to breathe, maybe because of the running nose it is not clean and make troubles for a baby to breathe properly, thats why she is breathing hard. No matter what, you must be concerned about that, becausa this is very important. Try to clean her nose, see inside the mouth if you may find something is different.

Take her to the doctor, if not to the same doctor then to the other one, because if you find things starnge or different, then you should pay a lot of attention to it, as well as doctors who take care of your child.
