My desert tortoise stopped digging her nest, should I help her dig or is it not suitable or is it a process?

She dug for about an hour, the ground has clay and rocks, don't know what to do?

  1. Young or new 'mothers' often dig bad nests at first, but they need to learn how to do it on their own. Leave her alone.


  2. she may not think it is suitable for her.

    set up a nesting tank with sand and peatmoss and try that. if it doesnt work still just vary and play around with different substrates until she feels comfortable enough to lay.

  3. tortoises will often dig more than one are for a nest, she will dig  holes until she is happy with the area she wants to lay her eggs in, leave her to dig her own nest  she will lay her eggs when she is ready, look out for signs of increased activity and boarder patrolling she may also go off her food just before she lays as well, but if she goes off her food for more than a week get her checked over by a vet to make sure she has no problems in laying or the eggs are being retained.

  4. she probably is just hot and is trying to find a cool place to hide if you have a heat lamp try not placing over the place give some space where she can not have heat all the time.if she is in another inclosure she may be trying to escape turtles dont normally dig for that long if they were going to lay eggs.
