My desktop is only 6 months old and running really slow?

I have good virus protection and I run the disk cleanup every two weeks. My kid downloads the free trials of games occasionally, but I uninstall them when the free trial is over. Is there anything else I can do to speed it up?

  1. There are several things you can do to help increase the speed of your computer. First of all, you can start running disk defragmenter which helps clear your computer up of unneeded and unnecessary files and it's located under Start, All Programs, Accessories, and System Tools.

Another way to speed up your computer is upgrading your current memory. Do you know how much you have? If not here's how you check.

Right click on the My Computer icon and hit properties. It should say down at the bottom by computer how much you have. An easy location to check what kind of memory you need for your computer can be found at www.crucial.com. I've bought memory from them for relatively cheap.

One final way to speed up your computer can be with system restore. I would only recommend this way if your computer has just been running slow RECENTLY. If it's been this way for awhile I wouldn't choose this option. If you do need to though it's under start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore. This action will restore your computer to a time where it was functioning normal. (This may get rid of programs you've installed beforehand and only use this if you have no other option.)

    Anyways, good luck!

  2. Clearing large files off your desktop helps some. De fragmenting your HDD may help a little. Not all anti virus software is created equally so how do you REALLY know you have "good" virus protection. I would control + alt + del to bring up task manager (assuming your using a windows based pc) and click on the tabe that says "processes". Check to see if theres something using an excessive amount of your CPU. If its "explorer.exe", you can do this, end that process, then go to "file" then "new task" type in explorer to restart explorer. RReally Im just taking shots in the dark, what are your system specifications?

  3. Yes. Do not let your kid download stuff on your computer that bogs it down. Those 'free' games load so much c**p on your computer. Virus protection does not help at all because the stuff is usually not a virus.

    Remember, NOTHING is free.

The best way to keep your good computer fast is to NOT connect it to the internet, ever. Use a garbage computer for that.
