My dial up modem suddenly cant get a dial tone.?

Question

I was using dialup service because wireless was not available through my phone company (Verizon). My new Acer laptop was working great with dialup for about a month. Then one day I couldnt get a dial tone. I called ACER and after a while they determined that the problem was with the internal modem. I sent it to their repair depot here in Texas.

When I got it back it was worse than before. Just the act of plugging in the phone line knocked The service receipt stated that they had

.. RELOADED DRIVERS AND RESEATED THE MODEM.

Can anyone tell me whats going on?

P.S. The laptop continues to work fine with WIFI.

They couldnt figure out what was wrong, so they just reset the whole computer and hoped it did the trick.  Yes, it could be your modem, but it could be many other things. i would try buying an external modem and plugging it in your phone line.  if your not getting a dial tone, it could be that your phone line is messed up.  so i would try an external modem and see if it works, if it does you know its your comp and not you line, :)
