My diamond fell out of my engagement ring on our honeymoon. How long should it take them to fix it?

Instead of a one carot diamond, in the center was 4 1/4 carot diamonds, and one fell out the first night of our honeymoon. I was devastated, but luckily we had it insured. So we dropped it off July 10, they told us it would be a week and a half. Then they tell us it won't be ready till August 16. I'm so bummed. I wasn't able to wear it to friends weddings and baby showers, its embarrassing. Should it take this long to get it back. We bought it from Kay jewelers? Should I threaten to contact the better business bureau? Or just be patient?

  1. First...do you have it insured?  My father sent an antique watch off that had diamonds inside, when he got it back the diamonds were replaced with cut glass!  Also, with it being such a short time period, I would speak to the manager where it was purchased to be sure he takes care of it promptly!

  2. I would be pretty mad because they said a week and a half and it's turned out to be over a month! That's not the right way to conduct a business. You would be better about the whole thing if they would've told you it was going to take a month upfront rather than hope you'll have your ring in a week or even 2! I would go talk to a manager at Kay's and express your issues with them!

  3. I feel for you! I don't know the exact answer, but I've always found the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Perhaps you need to call and pester them a bit... Maybe not threaten right away, but start giving them reasons to give it back to you. Tell them you aren't happy with the service and ask to speak to a manager.

    Good luck!

  4. Make sure when they give you back the diamond ring, you have it appraised by a reputable jeweler.  They could fool around and give you an inferior stone or remove all your good stones, and replace with inferior stones.  If you had wrote before asking where to buy an engagement ring, I would have told you not to deal with a mall jeweler like Kay Jeweler...They are rip off jewelers.  They probably ordered the diamond and it is taking a little longer than expected.  A note of information:  When you are dealing with a jeweler, always watch them work on your ring...never letting the ring out of your site.  Tell them you want to watch them repair the ring etc....Good Luck

  5. its been close to a month.  If not ready at 8/16 then I would go to the district manager or corporate seeing as they chaged the date and its been so long.

  6. If it isn't ready on Saturday, I'd freak out on them. It should have taken them no more than a few days to have that done.

  7. Well they'll have to get a new diamond in that's the EXACT fit, cut, color, clarity and everything..so it may take a week or so for them to find a diamond and order it in. It really shouldn't be a month, but they're probably sending it to Corporate (not their in-house jeweler) so that does take quite a bit longer. But it's only for the best. That is what we did when I worked at Samuel's...if a diamond was lost, then we'd send it to corp to have them replace it with a stone that was equal the specs of the other one. Don't worry. :)

  8. They most likely don't fix it at the store, they send it to their repair office, wherever that's located. So that could take a week or so just to mail the ring there. Then the repair shop has to find a stone to replace it. If they had to order it, that could take up to a week. Then, they put your ring on the list of rings to fix, which could be backlogged about a week. THen they fix it and ship it back, so we're looking at 4 weeks.

This is why I prefer invidiually owned stores rather than chain stores!

But anyway, I'd let it go unless you don't get it on Saturday. If it's not ready then either, then yes, complain to the manager, call the district office, etc. You might even demand to have it back and take it somewhere else!
