My doctor gave me medicine for a yeast infection, but...?

didn't have me come in for an appointment to be checked. I called because of discharge, itchiness, and discomfort during intercourse and they didn't even hesitate before telling me to go buy monistat 3. This is the second time I've used monistat and both times I was never seen by a doctor. My question is...if I'm taking this treatment and don't actually have a yeast infection...can anything bad come of that? I'm just worried that the discharge is normal with pregnancy and that the itching is from shaving (it's fairly hard when you're 26 wks pregnant). But I don't know what else the discomfort could be...I know it's not an STD because I'm in a monogamous relationship and was tested for everything at the beginning of my pregnancy.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for here. Reassurance that I'm doing the right thing taking the medicine? I just don't want to put a bunch of unneccessary c**p in my body, especially while pregnant!

  1. No, it's not dangerous. Don't worry about it. Your doctor wouldn't prescribe it if it were dangerous to take while pregnant or if you don't have a yeast infection. Yeast infections are extremely common during pregnancy. The Monistat is not systemic. It only goes in your v****a, and that's separated from your fetus by lots of layers of stuff (cervix, uterus, mucus plug, etc, even if it were harmful, which it's not.
