My doctor is considering signing me off work with depression

Question

I have a fairly good paid job and I have a mortgage and bills to pay, I don`t really want to be signed off work although my job can be stressful. What would happen to my life and wordly possessions if I got signed off work? How long would I get signed off for, would it be forever. I didin`t ask my docotr these things as I was a bit shocked. Should I pretend to be not depressed?
