Question:

My doctor told me to take medicine for a yeast infection but...?

didn't have me come in for an appointment to be checked. I called because of discharge, itchiness, and discomfort during intercourse and they didn't even hesitate before telling me to go buy monistat 3. This is the second time I've used monistat and both times I was never seen by a doctor. My question is...if I'm taking this treatment and don't actually have a yeast infection...can anything bad come of that? I'm just worried that the discharge is normal with pregnancy and that the itching is from shaving (it's fairly hard when you're 26 wks pregnant). But I don't know what else the discomfort could be...I know it's not an STD because I'm in a monogamous relationship and was tested for everything at the beginning of my pregnancy.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for here. Reassurance that I'm doing the right thing taking the medicine? I just don't want to put a bunch of unneccessary c**p in my body, especially while pregnant!

  1. Monistat is approved for use when pregnant.

  2. no, it is not harmful if you don't have a yeast infection, but it definetly sounds like you do have a yest infection.

  3. They probably told you to do a yeast infection treatment because they are very safe for baby. Won't hurt your pregnancy and its safer to try the over the counter meds for yeast infections. At your next ob appointment if your still having problems tell your doctor again and let them know which type of yeast infection cream you used. they will most likely test you and see if you need stronger meds, and if you have something besides yeast infection. Most likely when you get the meds it will go away because yeast infections are common in pregnancy. I suggest getting a three day or 7 day treatment since your pregnant. The one day treatments can be harsh and can actually increase itching and sensitivity for a few days.

  4. Monistat is safe during pregnancy.  Go ahead and do the medicine and if you still have the same symptoms, call your doctor and ask to be seen.  I could also be a bacterial infection, which won't be cured with Monistat.

  5. if you really don't trust your doctors judgement either insist they see you or try to access a different doctor if you can. other than that, monistat is considered relatively safe during pregnancy *not even tylenol is 100% safe* you should opt for the 7 day treatment instead of the 3 day, even though i know your doc said the 3 day treatment. better safe than sorry.

if you DO use monistat i have to say to only put the applicator in halfway. i had a burning sensation and a bit of irritation when i started using it earlier this pregnancy, but once i read that when pregnant you should only insert halfway, all the irritation went away.

good luck! yeasties suck, esp. when pregnant!
