Question:

My dog and dizziness...?? ?

My dog started to walk in circles about 2 days ago and kept running into things. I thought that she was starting to go blind, so I took her to the vet. The vet said that she has what elderly people sometimes get called "vertigo"...only this is the dog kind of that disease. He said that this disease heals itself within 2-3 weeks and then my dog should go back to normal. He gave me medicine to help her feel better and she does eat okay. What should I do? Should I wait to see if she gets better or put her out of her misery? I really would hate to put her to sleep if there's a chance that she can beat this.

  1. VERTIGO isn't deadly. It's just an inner ear problem Trust your vet.

  2. It's a vestibular disease meaning it has something to do with the inner ear.  However, this symptom is also related to stroke.  Is she eating well?  I would definitely wait the 2-3 weeks like your vet said and see if the medicine will help her.

By the way, it's not just elderly people who get vertigo, I deal with it myself and I'm young :)

ADD: To correct what another person said, vertigo is a SYMPTOM that causes severe dizziness sometimes with nausea and vomitting.  It is NOT a fear of heights.

  3. Don't put her to sleep. If the vet says that the disease heals itself then just wait it out. Until you are positive that she is really suffering than you can consider putting her to sleep.

  4. Aw, if she is running into things, that must be awful.. It must be awful.

If you ask your, vet if there is any other medication she/he can be given

    good luck xx

  5. Did the dog get his shots?  Because sometimes puppies walk in circles when they have parvo.

I am not trying to scare you, just make sure he is vaccinated!

  6. Vertigo for humans is being afraid of heights it's not a disease!  I would call it a fear!!

She will get better and really doesn't need to be put to sleep.

  7. If your vet said that the disease should be healed in 2-3 weeks, it will probably be healed in 2-3 weeks. In the mean time, just try to keep her away from sharp objects so she doesn't accidentally hurt herself. Take her outside, play with her, give her lots of love and affection, and maybe give her a treat just to make her feel better.
