My dog ate our chocolate. Should I bring her to the vet right away or watch her?

We bought this chocolate today and left it on the table. When we came back, the bag was empty and on the floor, ripped up. The chocolate obviously is nowhere to be seen.

The chocolate had coconut. And rum.

Neither of which are a good coupling for a dog, including the chocolate.

God.

She seems fine now. Zoey is still running, nipping for love and jumping everywhere.

  1. It depends on how much chololate, what kind and how big your dog is.  Milk chocolate is toxic to dog at about 1oz per pound of body weight, while dark and bakers chocolates are more toxic.   I would also be concerned about the alcohol in the chocolate and recommend calling your vet to see if they think you need to bring her in or just observe her.

  2. Yes, you need to take her to the vet, because chocolate has a certain mechanism in it that is toxic to dogs. And with rum being in there, that's a double whammy. Contact your vet and see if you can bring her in, and tell them you need to get her in there urgently, as she ate chocolate that had rum in it. Next time, leave anything like that away from where she can get it, like in a cabinet or on top of the refrigerator.

  3. She'll probably be fine but keep a close eye on her and if she starts acting lethargic call your vet.  If you're concerned, call your vet first thing in the morning anyway.

  4. I would, better safe then sorry.

  5. How much chocolate was it? How big is the dog? Those play major factors. If the dog did eat the chocolate her heart will be racing/pounding, you could feel it just sitting next to her. Give her some peroxide to make her throw it up (the vet will tell you the same) do it a few times to get it all out of her system. If that does not work then I would suggest taking her on in to the Vet, chocolate is toxic to dogs.

  6. It takes 1 pound of chocolate to kill a 12 pound dog. Symptoms are reslessaness, rapig heart rate.. So depending on weight and activity take to vet or not

  7. Consult you vet immediately and prepare for lots of clean up!

  8. Call them. They know her medical history and background.  They can tell you over the phone if she ate enough and needs to be seen.  Good luck.

  9. GO TO THE VET. my friend's dog just recently DIED from eating chocolate. have the vet look at your dog asap before it's too late!!

    i hope your puppy's ok
