He got into left over Chinese food while we were sleeping. There wasnt alot of onions but there still was some. I know that they are toxic to the dog. I was wondering if I should take him to the vet or if the amount he consumed isnt dangerous to him.

He is a good 70 lb Pointer who never gets table scraps.

  1. I think a little bit of onion won't hurt.  Call your vet and ask or try one of the many Ask a Vet websites.

  2. I have heard they are bad for dogs. Never seen it in person.. Well any issues from eating them anyways. I'd personally say watch him/her see if any part of her routine changes in the next 24-48 hours. If your dog seems to lay down more or act displaced it may be that she is showing signs of stomach pains. I am not sure exactly how the metabolism works for onions but if for some reason the dog has issues you need to be paying attention.

  3. um ya chocolate and onions are the worst foods.I would just call the vets office and get their oppinion instead of paying 2 take him in because this has happend b4 to my dog and they can tell u what to do over the phone!!

  4. At 70 pounds it would take a pretty fair amount to cause death.

Onions cause Heinz Body anemia in dogs.

It has to do with the red blood cells that carry oxygen to the dogs body tissues.

Depending on how long ago he ate them you could induce vomiting. But if they were consumed more than a half hour that may not work.

Google Heinz Body Anemia and read up on it or call your vet and ask if they feel it necessary to see the dog.

  5. i never knew onions were poisonus to dogs! well lucky me that he spit the mout because of the taste!

  6. It is not okay if your dog eats onions and they certainly shouldn't be eating them all the time as the other answerer stated.  They are very toxic to dogs.  I would just watch the dog closely if they begin to act strange or vomit or their stool is a dark color I would take them to the vet.  However you should call your vet to keep them aware that you may bring the dog in.  For a 70 lb dog it would take a whole lot of onions though.

  7. Observe his behavior today.  Make sure he's not lethargic, throwing up or having diarrhea, no blood in urine.  And he's eating and drinking normal.  He ate a small amount and he's a large breed.  He should be ok.

Sassy Steph: please stop feeding your dog onion.

  8. he will be fine... my dog eats them all the time and loves them.... i promise you there is nothing to worry about.

  9. Onions? Toxic?

    I never knew this.....

I just looked it up on google and found some interesting sites.

It looks like it depends on how much onion the dog ate as 70lb is a good sized dog.
