My dog- Jack Russell X 1 and abit year old...

he barks at the birds that swoop down in our yard..

he barks when the tenants come out to the yard to hang their clothes on the clothes line..

he barks at the tenants that come home late at night..

and there have been complaints about his loud barks.

we have tried everything..

we use to let him romp in the yard at night, and we now put him in his crate inside, but he barks at the sound of the door opening and he whines in the early morning, barks really loudly..

and have the whole streets dog start a dog choir..reall badd one too x.X

also, we have a muzzle to stop him from barking, but he can still whineand partly bark really loudly..

in fact, the only times he doesn't bark is when we walk him which is 3 times a day, each 15 mins long..once in the morning at 7 and one at the afternoon at 4pm and one at night at 7;30pm.

and other times are when we play with him which is between 4;30pm to 5;30pm and other times he just romps in the yard and barks his lil head off..

he has heaps of toys, but he can only play with them when we take off his muzzle, or he nips and bites the tenants and us and any other visitor..=S

i adopted him from a shelter, so there is no point telling me to give it to RSPCA and have him put down or w/e.

  1. You're dog is barking because he is bored... Have you been taking him out on walks? And if so how old was he when you started that routine. My point is if you're dog was 4 months old and you showed him the routine and Have been doing it ever since you're not understanding that your dogs energy level grows as he ages. If you go around 2 blocks you may have to walk a little more. And always keep your walks interesting for instance if you walk a certain routine try doing your routine backwards you will still end up in the same place. Now if hes barking while you're in the room hes basically saying "hey look". Barking is an attention getting behavior. Notice if you're watching tx and he barks what do you do? Look at him and tell him to quiet. He caught your attention and knows how to get your attention. So next time he barks walk out of the room your in into another. You're making a distraction you're showing him I'm not interested and going else where cause hes barking. Do the walking and if you cant walk him far enough try buying a backpack for him to wear. It will wear him out a lot faster. Also do the walking out of the room. If its at night that he barks walk him in the evening.. I hope that helped if not give me an email. mother_effin_princess@yahoo.com

  2. Google this guy called the Dog Whisperer

  3. Dogs want 4 basic things (just like people)

    1. eat

    2. sleep

    3. love/attention

    4. s**

figure out which one of these he is not getting and give it to him. if he is barking at the neighbours moving around all night i would guess it's sleep..... it may be cause he is cold or uncomfortable or stressed, have a look at his environment and see if there is some part of it you wouldn't like for yourself and change that.

  4. the over obsessive barking is a mark of the jack russel breed.  you're already doing the best thing for him by walking him 3 times a day and playing with him.  another dog might help, but make sure its not another "yippy" breed because that will just double your problems.  there is a little known surgery that can be done as well, but i don't recommend it.  it basically removes the animals vocal chords.

  5. You could try getting a water bottle and spraying him whenever he barks unnecessarily.  They also make these whistle things that go off with constant dog barking...it is an unpleasant noise that is louder to dogs than humans....I'm not sure about it though, better than shock collar, but I'd ask the ASPCA or some other anti-cruelty organization what they think.  I think what you may have to do no matter what, is be with the dog all day and all night to give him attention and guidance....and distraction from tenants and wildlife.  You may also call around for dog trainers.

  6. Do you live in sydney?? A really good dog behaviourilist helped me with my dog (he didnt have that many problems, just to get me on the right track).. she deals with agressive dogs and dogs with social problems and behavioural problems and from what i hear with great success.. doesnt use punishment methods either and she is very passionate.. Drop me an email if you're interested and i'll give you her email address because atm your dog has a behavioral problem which i reckon can be fixed -- edit: just looking at one of the answers below, i do agree that the excessive barking is probably because of the breed but im sure there could be a way it could me minimalised

  7. you should Google this guy called the Dog Whisperer. He has a really good DVD training program. Good luck! I know how frustrating this can be.

  8. He's bored. Jack Russells need a tremendous amount of exercise.

Get a bike and a leash and take him for a run twice a day. Hopefully, in a safe area or on the sidewalk. Or rollerblades and a leash or pool.

Probably a couple of hrs daily once his stamina is increased. See how long it takes before HE's ready to go home. Use that as a guide for exercise.

    Do not allow him to even try to nip. A lot of exercise may decrease the need to nip. Otherwise, I'd suggest a good dog trainer;

Don't let anyone tell you to put him down. He is trainable. They're a very smart energetic breed.   train for short time spans after exercise.
