My dog cries when she poos...is this normal?

she's a bichon frise and is about 5years old.

Hmm well she's not very old, but any type of disease can strike at any time.

Something very similar happened to my dear Ringo, and he had to be put down.

I think the best thing you can do is keep him comfortable and take him to the vet A.S.A.P.

Ask your vet to check your pooch out, it might be something simple......I had a cat that screamed when she used the litter tray...the vet said it had probably hurt her once and it had set up a habit....it was just a tad alarming to have her do that every day but she was healthy, not constipated and lived to a grand old age.

There cold be a problem with her anal glands, they may need emptying hence why your dog is in pain.  Take her to the vet and they will empty them if indeed this is the problem.  I know because the same thing happened to my cavalier King charles spaniel.

It sounds to me like your dog could be very constipated and is passing very hard stools.

Have you examined her stools? Maybe you could. With a plastic bag covering your hands, check the consistency and if they are hard, rock like stools, there is not enough moisture in her intestines.

Is she drinking adequately?

Did you change foods to one of those 'brilliant' foods that claim to firm up stools? if so, please consider changing to a better food.

I simply sounds to me that your dog needs more moisture and fiber in here diet.  You can help by offering her a tablespoon of fish oil, but ensuring that she's drinking properly and ensuring that her current food is not contributing to the problems.
