she gave birth to 13 healthy wonderful puppies but there has been alot of discharge coming out since the birth, between puppies she lost alot of green fluid and I called my vet and he told me not to worry, but there is more discharge, yesterday some VERY THICK black gunk came out, and just some liquid (cant tell what color since it goes on her blanket) and some blood is coming out of her v***a. I asked my vet if I needed a shot of oxitocin and again they told me not to worry but I am not trusting and still worried, before I sound like a an idiot and call them AGAIN, has anyone else's dog experienced ALOT of discharge??

  1. i think you need to take her in...my vet told me that also when my female Boston had her litter 3 years ago (when she was 2) and she had an infection and got very very sick but i thought i could trust my vet. i called another vet and asked about it and they said to bring her in right away and it turned out her stitches were infected and causing pus to come out of her.

  2. Take mama to the vet.  Don't call ahead.  Just get mama in the car and go.  Take puppies with for a checkup.  They should be seen, anyway.

  3. All dams should receive a post partum exam by the vet to ensure that all the placentas were passed and there are no retained pups. A green to reddish-brown vaginal discharge is normal for few days after birth. This should change to a watery pink bloody discharge that may persist for up to a month.

A tell-tale sign of a problem is any discharge that resembles tomato soup or contains puss, or that is green or brown colored *and* has a foul odor originating from the v***a. If she is running a temperature greater than 103.5 degrees, shows signs of listlessness, loss of appetite and/or continual diarrhea you should seek prompt veterinarian assistance.

  4. 13 is a large litter so there may be alot of afterbirth. However,it should be getting less instead of greater. Take the dog and pups in to the vet for a checkover please.

  5. It's been a long time since I have had a dog that has had pups, but if your Vet told you not to worry, then you probably don't need to worry.

Your dog had 13 puppies.  That is a large litter, and the black gunk that came out was probably a blood clot, or the placenta.  If the discharge does not have a foul odor like an infection would, she is probably ok.  It should slowly diminish to nothing over the next couple of days.  Just keep a close eye on her, and make sure she is taking in plenty of fluids, and eating solids and keeping it down.  Also make sure she is able to take care of the pups, and doesn't seem disoriented or abnormal to you.

You know her best, and if you suspect something is seriously wrong, take her to the vet anyway.  Sometimes you have to listen to your gut.  If your gut is screaming something is seriously wrong then something may be wrong.  If you don't trust your Vet, find one you can trust, ask around and see who your friends or co workers use and trust.  I hope your little mama is ok, and babies do well.  Best of luck to you

  6. Were all placentas accounted for?

No, it is not NORMAL. Bloody discharge, yes is normal, but green discharge during whelp usually means a detached placenta. Green or black during or after whelp is not good.

The last litter we had, she had some very dark discharge the next day, (all 12 of the placenta were accounted for!) and we just took her into the vet for a shot, and OMG..... you'd be surprised how much gnarl was expelled.

  7. Everything is totally normal! My dog had 2 pups 1 month ago our female chi had tons of discharge

  8. Before you go through all the trouble of going to the vet, I would call another vet to get a second opinion because you are not trusting. It's good that you are worried, after you get a second opinion do what you think is right. If you think she needs to see a vet go for it. Good luck! And have fun with the puppies!
