This is a question you need to ask your vet. It could be an electrolyte imbalance (it IS summer and a St. Bernard is a heavily furred dog), a potassium or magnesium thing, or something else entirely.  He may need a blood check to see what his levels are.

I would not ignore it. He's due to be looked at by someone, given what you described.

sounds like a pinched nerve in his spine, you may want to try a dog massuse, I have seen accupunture work, good luck, that is a drag
