  1. My dog has kidney problems not kidney failure and maybe that's the same thing with your dog. I would take her to the vet and see what's up with your dog. At my vet they have special food for cat's and dogs with kidney failure. I hope this helps your dog!

  2. ty..i just went through this..it was one of the hardest decisions i have ever had to make but the follow-though was harder.  when your dogs body begins to swell, when he shakes and is obviouly in pain..it is time. please be strong for your friend, he needs you to do the right thing for him.  only you can releive his suffering.  don't put this off,  I know how much this hurts, and you knmow that it is the best thing for him.  take some pictures and make sure he gets lots of love.  when the time comes to let it end for him, be strong and try not to let him feel your fear.   this is going to hurt, so be strong.  blessings to you.

  3. Not sure where you live but before you put the dog down try a holistic vet, you'd be surprised what they can do and acupuncture for pets is becoming much more common. It made all the difference with our Australian Cattle Dog. It both extended her life and increased the quality of the time she had, it was a night and day difference with the treatments.

  4. Your dogs sides will start to get bigger due to fluid build up. Also your dog may not be able to make it outside to go to the bathroom, they may go pee and poo on the floor where they are sitting, and there will be blood in the pee. We went through this about eight months ago, its a hard thing to get through, ours was a 15 year old mutt named Shadow!!!! :( I am sorry to hear of this, but your dog will always be in a better place over the rainbow bridge!

  5. Kidney Failure comes in degrees.  Using K/D and possibly subcutaneous fluids can extend a dog's life considerably.  Have you gone through all of this, and is the disease still progressing rapidly?

As a kennel operator, we have cared for a number of pets (both dog and cat) that have lived for years after being diagnosed.

Eventually, all have succumbed to their kidney failure.

The final picture on all of these animals has been:  extreme lethargy, and refusal to eat anything (including treats).  If your pet has these symptoms, make an appointment with the vet for euthanasia.  Treat him/her to a final day of special foods - you can't hurt him anymore.  Steak for the dog, fresh fish for the cat.  Give him the ultimate pleasure before you must say good-bye.

I have gone through this with client animals, and one of my own cats, and I feel it helped ease our pain by having that special day.

I'm so sorry you have to face this.  Good luck, and God Bless you both!

ADD:  Pain is not particularly an issue, as once the Creatinine builds up in the bloodstream, it clouds the ability to think, and the ability to recognize pain.

  6. dont wait till he is in pain.

i just went through this with MY dog, my poor baby lost weight like crazy, took her to the vet and vet (after doing a million tests) told me that she had kidney failure.

    she was going to die.

this kind of sickness is VERY PAINFULL

nobody can tell you what the best thing to do is.

i can only tell you what i did for my baby.

she started loosing alot of weight, i waited because she was still happy looking, still had lots of energy etc... till one day she didn;t want to play anymore... i took her to the vet and he said that she had started to go downhill... and it was a fast and very painfull ride..

i went home with her, we spent the whole day together, i gave ger anything she wanted, i went to the store and literally got her everything i thought a dog might like. real liver, chicken, hot dogs, doggy treats, peanut butter... you get the point.

i told her what a good dog she was, let her up on the bed, basically treated her like a queen. she slept with me that night.

early next morning i took her to the vet, and put her down.

she was a rottie, my best friend ever. her name was dolores.

i am at peace with myself because she NEVER suffered.

she was NEVER in any pain, i did my best not to be selfish and keep her alive till she suffered. i loved my dog more than anything, she was my best friend, and just let me say that i am very very sorry you are going through this.
