My little dog, only 6 pounds was bit about two hours ago by a small rattlesnake. She was bit on the nose and it is swelling. I rushed her to the vet, he said anti venom is not available here. He gave her steroids and antibiotics, Will she be okay? How long till I know? Should I try and stay awake all night or at some point will it be safe to fall asleep? What should I be on the look out for? Vet said there was incurable blood disorder that patients can get three to four days after bite, what do you know about that? Please help.

  1. vet vet vet now she can  die hope not

  2. what type of small rattler???

    Pygmy?

    baby real rattler??

generally, pygmy rattlers aren't such a big deal with a larger dog, i would be worried with such a small dog.

baby rattlers though back a bigger punch than adults...

it is hard, but do NOT go to sleep, get in your car, and drive very quickly to the nearest place that DOES have the antivenom.

  3. i think your little dog is a gooner. small (baby) rattlers are more deadly than adults. sorry.

  4. Why didn't you ask the veterinarian these questions?

Do you think people on Yahoo are more qualified that he/ she is?

  5. you need to get her to a vet that has the anti venom now! without it your dog will most likely die no matter how much steroids you give it all they will do it help to slow the process but it still needs the anti venom and yes your dog can die up to a week sometimes even two after a bite depending how much venom gets in the body. as for what to look out for look for oddness in behavior acting like a drunk and or really out of it just sitting around not having normal reaction time. as for if you can sleep or not that is your choice but if you do i'd wake up least every hour to check on them better to do shifts with someone if you can.

  6. Go immediately to the nearest vet or animal hospital.  I would bring her where they do have the anti venom-after the vet treated her with what he did.  I wouldn't wait the 3-4 days.

  7. dogs in general have less of a problem with rattlesnake venom than humans. the small size of your dog makes it a bit more serious just due to the volume of venom in a smaller system (i.e. more concentration).

the treatment given had been the only treatment widely used prior to the availabiliantiveninivenen for dogs; and now the vaccination now available for dogs with high exposure. GET SOME REST, as there is nothing more to be done except wait and see. Rattlesnake venom most usually causes skin injury (necrosis and slough) which can look pretty bad and rarely, systemic problems. So, pray a lot (as we will), keep poochie close by, quiet, and comfy; then just watch for changes in mood, thirst, hunger, and lameness. DON'T GIVE ANTIHISTAMINES. May the Lord watch over you all and bless the outcome.

  8. take her to a different vet, NOW!!! baby rattlesnakes are much more deadly because they inject more venom than adults.

PLEASE TAKE HER TO ANOTHER VET!

  9. The vet is basically referring to liver and kidney damage that occurs due to the snake bite. You will not know if that occurs (if the dog survives the initial 24 hours) until about 3-4 days out. I hope that your dog will be ok.

  10. i don't know where you are at but you need to get her anti-venom soon as possible. call some other vets find out if you can get it sent in  asap! a bite on the nose of a small dog is not good. hopefully she didn't get too much poison.  good luck.

  11. get her treatment now, what snake venom does is it eats away at the tissue because that is how they digest threre prey it breaks it down
