  1. bathe it.  It might be dried blood from itchy skin.  Or he was rolling around in charcoal or something.  I can't really tell from the info given.

  2. I would get it checked out by the vet. It maybe nothing or it maybe something that needs immediate attention. My Lhasa Apso had this in the later stages of kidney failure. Now I'm not saying this is what your dog has, but you do need to get it checked out.

  3. Well try giving him a bath, because you never know he could of dragged his groin in something black. cause i have a JRT (jack Russel Terrier) who loves to drag his groin on the ground, I don't know why but it's probably common cause they might be trying to scratch they're nuts or there groin.

  4. I'm going to assume that you are not simply referring to the black skin variations that are present on many dogs and are actually referring to the skin turning to a black color.

If that’s the case, it could be atopic dermatitis. Have you noticed if your dog seems to be l*****g, chewing or scratching that part of his abdomen frequently? If so, typically once your dog has itched that spot on its skin bald, a yeast infection or bacterial infection can contaminate the skin.

The reason the skin turns black is typically saliva staining. With long term skin problems, black hyperpigmentation will slowly develop, especially if the skin around that area looks a bit red and inflamed.

What causes this is a bit more complicated. It could be an allergy to flea bites, to dust or mold or even a food allergy! If you don’t already, I would start feeding your dog a sensitive skin formula food, the better quality, the easier it will be to eliminate what is causing this. I would suggest looking into things like Innova Evo, Solid Gold, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover, Pinnacle or even Flint River Ranch.  I would also go to the vet and see about getting an antibiotic for what could be an infection.

Wash your dogs belly with a very mild medicated dog shampoo designed to relieve itching (check for Hydrocortisone & Lidocaine). When the bath is done make sure to dry your dog very, very well – a hair dryer here would be the ideal way.

If your dog is super itchy, you can use Aloe Vera gel to relieve the itching sensation.

Bottom line though, you need to see your vet.

  5. They r right about the dermatitis. You should check out getting a skin soothing spray that will help with the irritation and he/she will stop l*****g - BUT go organic you don't want them l*****g poison...

If you are looking for organic / homeopathic (natural) pet products go to www.sandycreeksoap.etsy.com they’re awesome! They have an essential oil spray (in tons of scents - you pick) for deodorizing, a special "critter crazy" spray to keep fleas off with citronella and lemon grass, etc. in it - and special bar soaps for pets too. Some with oatmeal for soothing skin conditions, some with essential oils like citronella for keeping off the fleas, etc. PS - If you are looking for other "handmade" pet stuff, check out www.thegreenbone.etsy.com also has organic pet TREATS!
