My husband is pressing to have the surgery which will take money away from paying our medical bills. The Vet says it does not cause the dog any pain.It just is cosmetic. I want to wait. Especially since we can save up for it after we pay our medical bills. What do you think save and wait or take bill paying money (and risk collection).

  1. WHAT?! Sorry, i just don't understand why YOU'RE PUTTING YOUR BILLS BEFORE YOUR DOG!!!!!!!!!!! I think your husband is right, get the surgery done!!!!

  2. Cherry eye is the protrusion of the third eyelid. It CAN be caused by infection, but usually not. It is usually an innocuous incident. It does not hurt, it just looks bad. If your vet said you can wait, I would listen to him.

I understand your financial situation, HOWEVER; I can tell you from personal experience, that you can't put your bills above the pet. You can wait on this, but it is likely that something else will come up and push the surgery farther back. With this situation, it's ok. The cherry eye is not life threatening. But if something should happen where the puppy gets sick or has an accident, you need to make a decision on which is more important - the puppy or your bills.

  3. Its NOT just cosmetic. Cherry eye depending on severity can cause seeing problems. You need a new vet that has better ethics when it comes to animals.

  4. It can hurt him if untreated.

"If cherry eye goes untreated then the gland will dry out and the dog may start to paw and scratch at the eye causing further damage to the third eyelid tissue. The dog could also scratch the eye and cause a corneal ulcer."

  5. I think you should have the surgery because I think it would be cruel to let the dog have his other eye infected. If you are going to get a dog think how much it will cost before buying it. (that was not to the asker of the question to everyone in general)

  6. I think you should get it done. If money is a problem then you could discuss a payment plan with your vet. But seeings as it is only cosmetic and if it is not irritating your dog, then perhaps wait a few months and save up the money if your vet cannot help you out with finance.
