My little golden retriever loves to chew on wood. He just goes toward the bush takes a branch and chews on it. He also might have eaten some. Is that okay for dogs and is that strange or unusual in any way? He also ate this one thing ,I dont know what it was but it looked like fruit/a bug. Is that ok for him? And one more thing, he touched this dying mouse near my backyard and is that ok? Is he gonna get rabies or infected? Thanks.

  1. My in laws have a Golden and Rylie LOVES wood too... it's a constant battle with him.

We spray the bushes with Bitter Apple so he won't take a bite out of them, and the ones we don't want to spray, we will wrap a small, thin chicken wire around so he can't get to the branches.

Depending on what type of fruit it was, it can hurt him. If it's a bug, it depends on what type it was.

As far as the mouse, as long as he didn't bite or l**k it, he's good to go.

  2. Your dog is fine.. and chewing for goldens are perfectly normal.  I have a golden and she LOVES sticks!  She prefers sticks over all of her toys.

And all dogs are going to eat things they shouldn't, they are going sniff where they shouldn't, dig where they shouldn't, etc etc.  All you can do is try to keep them healthy by keeping them away from as much hazardous things as possible.

If you think she got into something bad keep an eye on her energy level, eating habits, drinking habits, and stool.  If anything changes take her to the vet for a check up.

    Good Luck

  3. he;will be find he will p**p out the wood and if he had his shots and the mouse thing will be all right to.

  4. take him to get checked out good luck

  5. You shouldnt let your dog chew on whatever he wants, that is how foreign bodies occur. Which he can die from if not caught and surgically removed within about 24-48 hours. Give him toys/treats, and monitor him. No he will not get rabies from playing with a dead mouse. If hes up-to-date on his rabies vaccine, and the mouse didnt bite him directly, then no. He can however get worms/parasites. If he ate a bug, thats fine. You should really train him to not chew on everything, that is just asking for a disaster.
