The grass has been ruined by the dogs digging or the Texas heat. We are getting a dog run for her to have her own space. Where do I start? How do I fix my yard? Help please.

  1. Build the dog a sandbox to dig in, in a shady area - seriously!  Mine love it and they don't dig up the yard anymore.

Rake the ground level (or rent a tiller if it's really big).  Then either seed or put down sod.  Sod is faster; seed is cheaper and better in the long run.  Water a lot.

  2. Unless you get rid of the dog you are never going to have a nice yard.

  3. First ,Make sure the dog run is shady and cool!

Dogs are way more important that grass.

I have 3 dogs, and I have been in the horticulture industry for30 years.

So first get the kennel/run installed.

Then dig up the yard, install a sprinkler system while the yard is already chewed up (no pun intended)  Then lay sod!

But Please make sure the kennel has plenty of shade from the hot Texas sun.

  4. Rye grass seed has typically the shortest sprouting among grass seeds about 2 weeks. You can buy premix (patch filler) or just buy a bag of rye seed it should be watered twice a day more if your soil is fulvic (clay like) I would recommend a high phosphorus fertilizer before seeding to reduce germination time and example of this would be mono ammonium phosphate. If this is not an option for some reason, I would contact a local golf course preferably a high end one and see if they have any waste sod, this is turf that for one reason or another is unsuitable for them if they happen to be renovating you might get a  whole new yard for free, provided you have a truck to haul.

  5. A fast fix is sod.  Call a landscaper and have him do it or look on the internet for sod to purchase and do it according to their directions.

    Good luck.

ps Hope the dog pen is big enough so the dog will be happy too.
