Every morning we go on a walk at around 7:45 or so and there's this lady who walks her golden retriever around our area. My dog Lacey loves to bark and growl and go at this other dog. She's just a Yorkie-Pom mix and i don't want this dog to hurt her. Every time i pull back on the leash, she still tries to go after the dog. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  1. LOL aww that is so cute, she must think shes tough!

  2. 1) increase the distance between you and this other dog - turn and walk in the other direction if necessary - do this before your dog has the chance to start reacting; the more often she gets to practice this behavior, the better she will get at it.

    2) stop pulling back on your leash - a tense leash tells your dog that there is something to be upset about

    3) when you have increased the distance adequately so that your dog is acting calm again, reward her for being calm

    4) keep yourself calm (breathe) and let your dog know you are calm

  3. Aren't you worried about the other dog getting hurt?  Your dog is the one being aggressive, just because she's small doesn't mean she can't do some damage.

Part of the reason she's getting so worked up is BECAUSE you are pulling on her.  You are confirming her fears.  There must be something wrong with that dog, because you are keeping her away.  She thinks you need protecting.  And now you probably anticipate what's coming, and pull up on her before you are near the dog, so it's just a vicious cycle.

Tomorrow morning, when you're out for your walk, and you see the other dog, just keep walking.  You can give the other dog a wide berth, if you like.  Don't tense up on the leash.  You want to keep her close, in case she does snap, but don't yank on it and keep her pinned to your side.  And just keep walking.  Don't even look at the other dog, or your dog.  Don't talk to your dog, just keep walking.  Stay calm and relaxed, like there is nothing wrong.

Have you tried letting your dog sniff and say hello to the other dog?  Ask the other owner if you can, and keep the leash relaxed and keep yourself calm.  She could just be a lot of talk.  Just make sure the other owner is okay with it.
