Question:

My dog has terrible gas!?

Another question about my 3 month old puppy and her intestinal issues.

She has terrible gas! She farts a lot, especially when she's sleeping. Could her food be causing this, or is it just a puppy thing? She has also been known to eat her own p**p (I try to catch her before she does it, but she's very fast), so maybe that is part of the reason? Any ideas?

  1. The eating her own p**p thing is a learned behavior from her mom.  That's how the mother cleans up after the puppies.  At least that's one of the popular theories. They usually grow out of it.  If not give her a piece of fresh pineapple - that will make her p**p taste bad or buy one of the products at the pet store that is made for this. The gas could be from the type of food you feed, but you don't mention what kind of dog and some are more prone to gas than others.  You might try some plain yogurt on her food.  If you are feeding a food with corn try one that doesn't have it.  There are also gas inhibitors that you can buy at pet stores.

  2. My mums dog had terrible gas as a puppy and still does. Gas is caused by different foods changes all the time and the stumach can't handle the changes. I don't think that eating her poo causes it. Does she eat her food fast? If she does that could be the reason she eats her poo.

  3. Yep, it could be the food. What food are you feeding her?  Has she been to the vet lately?

  4. the p**p is not a part of the reason =D Its a puppy thing and a food thing. Plus he might gulp a lot of air when hes eating especially if he eats really fast =)

  5. If your puppy is having terrible gas try switching to a higher quality food.  Yes, food does cause gas just like it does with us.  Feed Grain Free options like Natural Balance Grain Free, Innova Evo, Blue Buffalo, to mention a few.  The nice thing about higher quality foods is you can feed a little less and the clean up is reduced also.

As far as eating her own stool, that is dangerous.  You can purchase a product at most pet food supply stores that you add to the dog's food.  It processes and makes their stool detestable (which it should be anyway!)

  6. If you're feeding her a poor-quality dry food  or a cheap canned food, either can cause gas

  7. Is she a big breed dog? If you get elevated food bowls the puppy wont have to bend over as much, which causes the dogs to swallow alot of air while theyare eating causing a very gasie doggies.

  8. hahaha......its a natural things for puppies..

  9. Well, that would explain the terrible breath if she has it... lol.

Honestly, all puppies and adult dogs will f**t from time to time... but if it's really getting excessive and you're worried, you may want to consult a vet who can take a look at her digestive tract. I wouldn't worry about it though. It may be the food she's eating, or it may be that your puppy is a natural gas deposit, haha. Is she eating soft food, or solid food? Solid food often cuts down on gas I've found.

    Hope this helps!

  10. My dog when he was a puppy use to get gas also.  I use to give him a teaspoon of non-fat plain yogurt after he would eat and this seemed to stop the gas.  I have also given it to him when I notice he is gassy and it works every time.  My dog is now a year and a half, and he very rarely get gas any more.  Give it a try.  You can try feeding her pineapple also.  There is something in it that makes the p**p unappealing to them.

  11. Most dogs will in p**p :p BLECK

but anyway, the gas is just a dog thing. most will do it, especially labs and bullies  XD

it could be your food, but in that case your could just get a dif. flavor that might help.... Lamb and Rice keeps the....uh....gas levels....down
