Okayy .. so we got a lab. and hes lovely and all but hes stone mad! Like he can be handled to play with no bother and train to most things but when it comes to going for walks hes impossable. He drags my brother (29) around so I (15) have no hope if walking him with just a lead and coller with strength like that. How can I get him to calm down and stop pulling? I understand hes young (14months) and has alot of engry but when he sees something hes gone theres no stopping him. How can I get more control of him and get him to behave better on the lead? Would a harness help much?!

(:

  1. Prong Collars work wonders for pulling! My 100lb German Shepherd does great with his, if he doesn't have it on, he's a huge pain to walk. You can find them at multiple pet supply stores.

  2. Try a head collar. every time he pulls his head will be pulled in the opposite direction and he will eventually realize that when he pulls his head goes in an uncomfortable position.

  3. Labs are always puppys, no matter what age they are!!  A gentle lead will correct the problem immediately, you can get this at any pet store. I would suggest obedience training as a follow up.  They are loving intelligent breeds who really do want to please you and will learn quickly with the right instruction.  Be patient and keep working with him.

  4. you need a head collar it wraps around the mouth and the head so when he walks if he begins to pull foward his head will turn so this gives you the control but you also need to be confident and walk him atleaset 3 times a day labs r workin dogs and they need excersize or they can litterally be a pain in the butt theyll start to try and escape chew on everything bark excesivly and get really streest out

  5. Buy a choke collar, head harness or a no pull harness that goes around his chest and legs.

  6. Use a head collar. It helps you control him more. If he pulls turn him around and walk the other way after he calms down back the way you want to go. keep doing this and he will learn that pulling makes him do the way he doesn't want to go. It might take awhile. So would just start with walking on the head collar in the backyard then around the neighborhood if you can.

  7. When your dog starts to pull, stop immediatly! Do not continue to walk until he comes back to you. Then you start walking in front of him. He will soon understand, that if he walks behind you, he will get to walk, if he pulls, he gets no where fast.

  8. Everytime he does that try shouting for loud with discontent. Usually dogs get startled and stop. I usually find the it helps if you hit the dog on the thigh or somewhere thick so the sound startles and shocks him rather than it actually hurting him. If you keep doing it regularly, he should get the jist that he's doing something you don't like.

Also get him use to leads, when he's around your house get him to wear one, maybe at night or something, and tie him down. He should get use to it that way. That's how we did it for our retrievers.

Don't mistake a little bit of harshness for animal cruelty, sometimes it's for the greater good xD lol

  9. Prong collar, high and tight..pulling will stop within minutes!!

  10. okay, when i first got my staffy, he was the same as ur lab but now he's a perfect gentle...uh, dog

anyway, what u have u do is buy a choke chain

i know it sounds dead cruel and horrible but he wont pull if he knows nothing goods gonna come out of it

if u dont want to do that, then u can jst stop walking everytime he pulls nd make sure u stand firm if he does but it sounds like he might be a bit too srong for u if that happens

anyway, hope it all works out =]

  11. A regular collar will not work, Get a harness that comes under their front legs and buckles on top. Another is a harness that fits over their mouth and nose.

  12. Use a shock collar. Some of you may feel it's inhumane but you won't have to use it more than a couple of times. It works with invisible fences, it will work with a leash.

  13. hi a harness would help a little bit as i have a staff and they are also strong, he has a harness and he has improved a little bit with it on.

If you want quick results i would suggest a dog trainer or you could just wait until he calms down as i think all dogs are hyper at that age.

    hope this helped =)

  14. a harness probably won't work, try a different collar ad keep it higher on the neck (if you've ever seen a dog show, notice where the lead is on the neck)  By placing the collar differently he will feel it different.  When he starts to pull try to distract his brain from what gets him excited, make sure he always walks beside or a little behind you.  Obedience training is a good way to go

  15. try a halty muzzle or a good obedience class should help

  16. use a gentle leader head collar works great. it can be gotten at petsmart.

  17. hi mom!

  18. I have the same problem. I adopted a 55 lb AmStaff, with no previous training. She is wonderful, until she sees a cat! Last week, she took off, and I ended up on my back after doing a flip mid-air!

We have tried harnesses, and the gentle leader/head collar. The only thing that works is the obedience collar-- it has "claws" (or prongs) that will dig in her neck if she pulls, and she very quickly learned not to pull. But, if I use her regular collar, she still pulls. My hubby refused to try it, because it would "hurt her." And what about me? Lying on my back on the cement? He went to the store with me, and I told him to try it around his arm. He agrees it doesn't really hurt, and when he saw how our dog reacted, he was convinced in only a few minutes that we needed it!

    Good luck!

I have a new puppy AmStaff too, and she is still learning how to loose leash walk.

ADD-- Don't use a choke collar, they can cause damage!

  19. Flat collars are no good for training...they are only for dogs that have been trained and can be trusted to not break this training while walking.

I would be signing up for obedience classes ASAP...one that teaches positive re-enforcement. I have tried all the pleasant appearance ones that others have mentioned so as to not have to deal with people believe I am a cruel owner...halti, gentle leader, lupi etc. but I have 4 large breed dogs (3 rotties and a corso) and me being only 140 lbs I need to have control at all times and none of the above mentioned collars offered that. If you try one and they work for you congrats...obviously go with what works.

On my rotties I am able to use choke chains and they have trained enough with these ( collar being up just behind the ear for a quick effective correct) that now they just require a verbal correction and they are back to heeling but the collars are still used just to ensure they are in control.

My dominant corso require a prong/pinch collar. She is a solid muscled girl of about 100lbs and when determined can be a handful.

I have used this on myself for all those that think they are cruel (my leg) and they don't tear or cut the skin. They do make some discomfort which is what they are for. This worn directly behind the ears is the most effective training tool that we found. Hemi is still a puppy as she is only 15 mos and will settle in but until that time.

That being said any training tool in the wrong hands are can cause damage. Before trying any of these enroll in a training program!

  20. You need to be the leader.. ALWAYS walk in front of your dog never let it in front of you. That way you dog know you are the leader of the pack. Start by not walking but just by standing there. Work with him until he comes submissive to you.

  21. Gentle leader is the best! My APBT used to pull me around every where and she is so strong it was like she was walking me. The gentle leader goes over their snout. It's almost like horse reins. She hasn't pulled me since I got it. Just make sure you give him a treat when you put it on and when you take it off it will help him get used to it easier. You can get one at petsmart or your local pet store could possibly have them too. Good Luck!

I wouldn't recommend a choke chain. I used mine on my APBT and her neck just got stronger after a while the choke chain didn't even phase her.
