My dog is a boy, but he doesn't **** his leg...?

My dog is a 9 month old puppy. He has been 'done' and when he pees, he doesn't c**k his leg... Is this normal? We only have one dog - would contact with another male dog be good for him?

  1. Maybe. I have seen female dogs that hike their legs and male dogs that squat. I think it has to do with who they learned to pee from.

  2. I have two male neutered dogs and neither of them lifts a leg to pee!  Not sure if that's a learned behavior or not -- my dad had 1 male dog and he always lifted and never learned it from another dog...but these two grew up together and just never thought to do it!  They're 4 1/2 now and have just never done it -- fine by me, then they won't lift on someone's leg!!!

  3. It could be just a different style and position of peeing.

  4. That is normal for a puppy that young. This behavior develops as they get older. Young puppies are not stable enough to lift one leg up hence it is an adult behavior.

  5. Depending on the dog I guess. I have a 3 year old male Australian Cattle dog  who also doesn't lift his leg when he pees and he has been around other male dogs that do, and he's seen them. My dog is very smart and well trained too. I like the fact that he doesn't lift his leg, the other dogs always are going pee and the other dogs are going pee over their pee. My dog doesn't and I'm glad!

  6. Yeah, they usually have to see another dog do it to catch on.

It's no big deal if he never does.  It doesn't make him any less of a man.  LOL!

  7. you said c**k. tehehehe

  8. Its alright if he doesn't. When male dogs c**k their legs, it means that he is marking his territory. He just probably doesn't want to.

  9. hes just a puppy still give him time he will lift his leg soon!!

  10. My males dogs never did it because we got them from the shelter at 8 days old. They never saw other dogs doing it so they never picked it up. In the end it was good for them when they were old because they never felt bad for not lifting their legs.

  11. 99% of these answers are wrong....be sure to do your research.  The cocking of the leg is a territorial action.  My male pup still pees sqwating (that is good in my opinion)  most dogs lift their leg to pee and or because they are marking their territory.  This can and sometimes most definetly be done in/around your house.  He will do it on your belongings just because he thinks it is his, therefore you are his also "his".  Do not rush nature, would you like to break the cycle of lifting his leg?  Firehydrants?  That is a common pose right?  they are re-marking "someone" elses "territiory"  hope this helps, I am not trying to be harsh, just  Google dog dominance and you will find a multitude of information.

  12. It depends on the dog. Our 6.5 yr old English Springer Spaniel has never lifted his leg to pee. He squats all the time. Our 2.5yr old Beagle lifts his leg every time he pees. Does it matter if he lifts his leg or not. At least he is peeing.

  13. its pretty normal,

my dog is just over a year old and he only started cocking his leg up when he pees

    so yeah

  14. My dog didn't raise his leg to pee until he was about a year old, or maybe even a little older. Before he would squat like a girl, now he raises it all the time. :)

EDIT: Maybe the territory thing is right, because at our other house he never did it but when we moved to my mom's house (she has 2 dogs and there are a lot of dogs in the neighborhood), he started doing it.

  15. So what. Not all males lift their legs to pee. My 5-6 year old lab squats to pee at home, saving the leg lifting for trees on walks.

  16. Well first of all not all male dog will raise there legs when they pee. If your puppy was neutered young then he may never raise his leg. And dose it really mater how he pees all my male dogs squatted when they went pee just because they had not learned to raise there legs they were neutered before they even started that. So don't worry you dog is not strange if he dose not raise his leg to pee.
