My dog is depressed?

my sister's dog had to be put to sleep yesterday. when we got home without her, it seemed as if my dog knew she wasn't coming back. she has been laying by the front door since then, she doesn't want to play or do anything that she used to. is this normal for a dog to be depressed? if so, how can get her to go back to her old self again? would you recommend getting her another dog to play with? thanks in advance.

  1. Yes, dogs are smart and grieve just like humans do. Give her extra love and attention, and I recommend getting another dog. The new member will distract her from your sister's dog, and keep her occupied. It will also get her more motivated to see another dog doing things around her.

  2. Getting Another Dog To Play With May Or May Not Be Such A Good Idea Depending On Your Dogs Personality.

You Should Try Taking Her To The Park To Play With Other Dogs Or Maybe Even Out For A Long Walk Up A Hill.

  3. get another dog but make sure that the new dog's activity level/hyperness is lower/less than the dog u have now.  dogs also grieve like people do.  give her some time and get her another Friend.

  4. Give her time. She will be alright. It's perfectly normal behavior.

  5. yes my dog did this.it took a while but,he did get over it.just play with her and try to distract her.

  6. Dogs grieve just like people do. In time she will understand that the dog is not coming back and will soon after that get over the loss.

For now let her grieve...play with her a little more and show her some extra attention. Maybe take her for an extra walk every day and play a good game of fetch :)

She knows you are sad as well so it's even harder for her...

    Good Luck!

  7. she might be depressed. its normal for a dog to feel that way when theyve been together for so long. my dogg did the same thing a couple years back. (it was sad for me to cuz my mom had the dog for 19 years)

  8. The same thing happened to my dog when we had to put our other dog down. For some dogs it just takes time for them to accept being alone or wait a couple of months and then get another dog. We got a puppy a couple of months after we put our dog down and Kodi seemed to perk right back up and went back to being himself.

  9. My dog princess had to be put to sleep as well. Our other dog Panda was her son from her only litter, so he had never ever been without his mom, or ever been alone. he loved being outside all day, but after she passed away he would only go outside to go to the bathroom, and would whine at the door when he was done. he wouldn't go on walks because princess always kept him calm, but all the cars and sounds scared him, he pulled his head out of his collar and ran home and scratched at the door until my dad let him in (that happened twice). it was so hard to see my dog like this, he is usually a very happy and loveable dog. i gave him a month or two, and he just got worse. i was lucky enough that my friend's dog had a litter of puppies, my parents didn't want another dog, and i wasn't ready for a puppy either, but i knew panda needed something to get over the loss. getting a puppy was the best thing i've ever done for him, they are best friends and cant be separated.

give your dog some time to try to get over it, if he doesn't then you should get him a dog to play with
