My dog is eating my cats f***s right out of the cats litter box. The chemicals in the litter might be toxic to his system but I'm not really sure what the facts on that are. Last night my dog threw up what looked like fecal matter. Before i could clean it up he had swallowed the vomit right back up. For the rest of the night he seemed a little sick and when he stood still he acted very wobbly and unstable. However he was still quite alert and even excited to go for a walk. He's perfectly fine today but I'm still worried that he will continue doing this. Any suggestions or useful information about this specific subject?

  1. Very sharply and quickly clap your hands or jerk it's collar and say "No!" Praise it when it stops and comes back to you. If that doesn't work, a muzzle could work, but you would have to keep it on him for a few weeks until he seems uninterested with the f***s.

There are also collars that spray a nontoxic scent into the dog's air passage and makes the smell of the f***s unpleasant. I'm not sure if pet stores sell it where you are, but you would need a dog trainer to show you a few tips on how to properly use it with positive effects~

Hope this helped at least a little

  2. Put the litter box up on the dryer or a high counter that the dog can't get to.

  3. We have had this problem with our lab on several occasions. My advice is, if you don't have a covered litter box you need to get one, that is the best deterrent there is. Also, if the box is in an open area that's easy access. Try to find a place where you can put it next to a wall and angle it towards the wall where your dog can't maneuver to get to it.

    Hope these tips help!

  4. You could put your cats litter box where he can't reach it, make some kind of platform for it that the cat can reach but the dog can't.  You could get one of those that the cat can into but other animals cant.

  5. My dog does the same thing, so I googled it.  Several different websites told me that dogs eating cat f***s is normal...to an extent.  If they eat a lot of f***s it could mean theyaren'tt getting the nutrients they need which believe it or not cat f***s has them. (weird, i know).  Try changing diets or maybe even vitamins.  I also learned that when a dog vomits its because there is something in their stomach thatisn'tt digesting so they vomit it up then eat it again.  Another natural thing they do, disgusting but natural.  You can go to any search engine and find lots and lots of info about your breed of dog.

  6. Good luck stopping you dog from a nice pile of what smells like food :)

The litter isn't that toxic; it's mostly clay, charcoal and a little fragrance.  Don't be too worried, our dog does the same thing.  The first time we left the cat box where she could get to it, she must have eaten a lot of cat poo and didn't get sick, but she is a 70 lb dog.

There really isn't a lot you can do to deter a dog from a kitty box, other than put it out of his reach.  We have a walk-thru baby gate that we put up in the hallway so we could put the cat box in the back of the hallway.  If you have an unused bath tub in your house this is also a good place, or on top of a washer/dryer.

  7. i keep a rolld newspaper next to the litter box for this reason alone!! a whap on the nose and a firm NO!!!!!! has done the trick!! and he's verrry stubborn and this has worked well.

also...what works for my kitty is also working for my dog.  When i have the spray bottle around and i see him going to the litterbox's direction i spray him and firmly say NO!!! he hasnt been too happy about the water or the newspaper...and he's stayed away lately!!!

    goodluck!!

  8. Move the litter box!  dogs are attracted to cat poo, don't know why.
