My dog is getting neutered on Monday, what's the healing time?

Just wondering what the healing process is like for a neutering. Will I have to look after him the next day or can I go to work?

  1. I just had my dog neutered last Monday....  he is totally fine now.  They gave me a pain killer to give to him every morning and it made him pretty sleepy so he just slept all day.

    Good luck!

  2. Seven to ten days is the typical heal time. Its best to keep him crated and keep his stress levels reduced. If you can't watch him, buy an E-Collar to keep him from chewing or l*****g at the stitches/glue.

He should be fine alone, just follow the procedures given by your vet and make sure he's relaxed.

  3. It takes about 10-14 days after the operation. I left the e-collar on my dog for 14 days just to be sure.

You can probably go to work, but you must make sure your dog is in a safe, secure, and quiet area so he can rest. Also make sure there is nothing in there he can jump on. And leave the e-collar on him so that he can't get at the stitches.

  4. It's up to you- maybe your vet can keep him a bit longer too.

He will be groggy the first 2 days from anesthesia, and may be sick. Mine threw up! Yuck! He will need pain meds every few hours. If you can come home and check on him, go to work. But if you can take the day off without any problems, do it!

  5. Your dog should be fine as long as you have a cone for him.  You don't want him to l**k the incision to much.  You want to keep the dog from jumping too much the first several days - I try to keep mine calm/ not jumping for at least 3 days.

Depending on the size of your dog your vet will most likely send you home with some pain meds and an antibiotic.  The neutering healing time is much shorter today compared to what is was about 12 years ago.

Besides preventing jumping and l*****g for several days, you will not want to bathe your dog for about 10 days.

    Good luck!

  6. He should be fine. Remember when you neuter a dog the healing process is a lot quicker than spaying because it really isn't a surgical procedure. They don't have to go 'into' your animal to remove anything. Just a lil snip. lol Your dog will most likely l**k and bite at the stitches but mine did the same thing. You really can't stop them from that. But they do heal pretty fast.

  7. Most neutering is done now without external stitches and the healing time is greatly reduced.  Your dog should be feeling a little sorry for himself for a couple of days but he can engage in normal activity.  Just check the site to make sure that there isn't any swelling or redness for the next few days because that would mean that there was some infection.  I have never given pain meds to a male who has had a neutering.  It just is not needed.  You should be able to go to work the next day.
