  1. If your vet suspects Liver Disease, you really need to have her tested, to find out for sure, if that's what she has! If she does, then you need to take into consideration, what would be best and most humane for her! I'll tell you what just happened to me, and hopefully, you will understand, that Liver Disease, is an excruciatingly painful disease, that very rarely gets better, unless it's cause in the very, very early stages! Two of my Chihuahuas were diagnosed with Liver Disease! One of them, Gigi  just passed away, a week ago this past Sunday after fighting this disease for months! She was only 2 1/2 years old! The other one Zoe, is fighting with everything she has, to stay alive. She is doing ok so far, but I don't know what's going to happen in the future and I'm hoping and praying that I don't lose her too! The vet still doesn't have any idea, how they even got this disease, because they were both always so healthy and had never been sick with anything, until this happened. Zoe, will not be going to the same vet, but has an appointment  this Saturday with a different vet, who will be able to tell me if he thinks she has a chance or if I should have her Euthanized, before she goes through the same thing that Gigi did! If this vet says that she has any kind of a chance of surviving this terrible disease, I will continue to do anything it takes, to get her better, but I will not let it get to the point, where it's obvious she will not get better, and I will not let her go through what my poor baby Gigi went through!  I will also let the vet know, that if at anytime he feels, that it's time to put Zoe down, as much as I dread and hate that idea, it would not be fair to keep her going, if all she is going to do is painfully suffer with the disease, to please tell me! I will no longer be taking any of my pets, to a vet I no longer trust!

This is what happened!!! Gigi was going to this vet once a week, every week for months, was on 8 different medications including Morphine for the pain she was in. My problem is, that with Gigi, I kept asking the vet, over and over again, if she thought that we should put her down, because I was the one that was watching her suffer everyday, kept telling her certain things that were happening to Gigi and told her that I did not think, it was being fair to Gigi to make her keep suffering this way!  Each time I asked her, she refused to put her down, every time Gigi took a turn for the worse and kept telling me to continue the treatments, and eventually she would get better, but that it would take months, so because she was a vet, I adored and loved Gigi and wanted to keep Gigi around for a long time, and was willing to do anything it took, to get her back to normal, but if I would have known, that she would only get worse, and that she had no chance of survival, and that she would die such a painful death, I would have taken her to another vet and had her Euthanized!  I trusted my vet, and my dog died a painful death because I trusted her. I'm not saying all vets are bad, by no means! I had been taking my other pets to this vet for years and never had any problems with her! The day before Gigi died, I took her to the vet, for the second time that week, because she was very weak, not able to keep anything down, and could not stand at all! The vet flat out told me that day, her temperature was 96.8,  that she was dying, and again I requested to have her put down that day, because it was obvious that she wasn't going to make it. I had a feeling, that the vet knew all along, that she was not going to make it, and kept making excuses, that the treatment she gave that day, would help her, which it never did, so because of the fact that vets are supposed to know better, I listened to her, let her treat Gigi and took her home! She suffered for nothing and was in tremendous pain, and it was unfair for the vet to keep her going that way! The next day, Sunday, she died in my arms, before I could take her to an ER Vet, to have her Euthanized.  Watching her die, was terrifying, heartbreaking and will stay with me, for the rest of my life. Those images, will never go away! What you say, just by looking at her, that she is not in pain, is not at all true. Dogs are very good at hiding their pain! I can guarantee you, that she is in tremendous pain and she will get worse, if she does have Liver Disease! You have to have her tested, to make sure that is what she has, and if she does have Liver Disease, unless it's caught immediately, she probably will die, and the only humane thing to do, would be to have her put down, so she does not suffer the way that Gigi did! Usually, with Liver Disease, there are not symptoms, and by the time the dog starts showing symptoms, the Liver is already 80% destroyed and way too far gone! Gigi and Zoe both had full physicals, 6 months before they were diagnosed with Liver Disease and everything came back perfectly normal, with absolutely no signs of any upcoming illnesses!  Please, for your dogs sake, have her tested, and if the vet says, that it is Liver Disease and she has no chance, the humane thing to do would be to Euthanize her!

  2. they know what they are doing, let the dog go, if its in pain its only right to have it put down, its cruel to let it suffer i know its hard but it must be done, sorry

  3. how do you know how much pain she is in, they will do tests if you ask them to and a vet will never put a dog down unless absolutely necessary

  4. no they cannot they need your permission first and i am sorry have they tried everything

  5. dont be so selfish! if the vet wants to put her down he/she has a very good reason for it! that poor animal is obviously in pain

do whats best for her! i know its hard but you need to consider her needs rather than yours

  6. No but if the dog is suffering its for the best.

  7. If the dog is that sick that the vet wants to put her down, what is your reasoning to say no? They cannot do it without your permission. But if the dog is that ill you may want to consider whats best for the dog not just yourself.

  8. No they can't. Didn't they try to find other treatment options first?

  9. I don't think so

but its probably best to. Not putting it down its making the dog suffer more, my cat had to be put down in january, but in a way it was better than seeing her suffer, she had a tumor in her liver, but she was so weak in the end that she couldn't hold up her own body weight.

  10. demand tests and if  they think your dog is suffering i thinks its in best intrest for the dog to put it down its his life he has to deal with the pain just think about it. but demand tests

  11. if your dog is sick and it is something to do with its liver then you should have it put to sleep it is cruel to keep it if the vet thinks it is that ill would you like to suffer from liver disease im sure you wouldnt and it is kinder toi have the dog put to sleep if it is nessacary

  12. as far as i am aware they need your permission, but surely if your dog is ill and in pain then its kinder to put her to sleep, its hard to let go but it would be for the best.

How old is your dog btw and what is wrong with her?

  13. Hi I DONT THINK THE VET CAN MAKE YOU PUT YOUR DOG TO SLEEP BUT IF ITS SUFFERING PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING I HAD TO HAVE MY LITTLE GIRL YORKIE PUT TO SLEEP 2 MONTHS AGO THEY TOLD ME AT THE START THAT THERE WAS NO HOPE FOR HER I HAD BLOOD TESTS EX RAYS ULRA SOUND EVERYTHING I COULD BUT THE ANSWER WAS STILL THE SAME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO FOR HER IT WAS THE HARDEST THING IVE EVER HAD TO DO AND I MISS HER EVERYDAY THERES NOT A MOMENT GOES BY THAT I DONT THINK OF HER BUT SHE WASENT THE SAME LIVELY DOG AT THE END IT WAS LIKE SHE WASENT EVEN THERE SHE WASENT HAPPY COULDENT REST I STAYED UP WITH HER ALL NIGHT DEEP DOWN HOPEING SHE WOULD PASS AWAY IN HER SLEEP SO I DIDENT HAVE TO TAKE HER TO THE VETS THE NEXT DAY I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE HER HERE WITH ME TODAY BUT I DID WHAT I HAD TO DO ITS PAINFULL I KNOW BUT DO IT FOR YOUR DOG PLEASE

  14. No they can't and they won't.

I don't imagine your vet would suggest this unless your animal was really suffering. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. You have to ask yourself what's the best thing for your dog, not what's best for you.

  15. no they cant but id get another vets opionon as to weather he should be put down or not my vet wants me to put down my dog but i wont hes not in pain he just has hardly any cartlidge in his legs n hes go glucoma

  16. Not that I know of. I'm wondering why you are holding on if the dog is that sick, or is it not that bad? If there is a reasonable chance of recovery than I could understand. Otherwise you are prolonging its suffering. Either way it is up to you. The vet can't do it without your permission. But if the dog is really suffering I am betting the  vet may be able to call the SPCA to deal with it, as it could constitute neglect or abuse.

  17. As far as I am aware the vet has to ask for consent. I have always been asked before a dog was pts.

Either act your vet for an urgent referral to see a specialist veterinarian who has particular expertise in the liver or change vets to one that will carry out the tests.

Visually examining your dog for signs of pain and discomfort is not necessarily accurate. Find out what is wrong and then you will be able to make an informed decision.

  18. No, they can't put your dog down without your permission. You may want to try and get a second opinion from another vet. If your dog is sick with something (ex - cancer that has spread)  it can't be cured from then that may be the reason why your dog needs to be put down. You will end up spending lots of money for medication etc for something that won't go away.

As much as you don't want to, whatever your dog has may be to painful to live through until he or she passes. So putting him or her down may be best.

  19. Hi they cant but the thing is is your dog suffereing if he/she is in pain then I know you dont want to lket your dog suffer then it is best in the end to put your dog to sleep which is best for your dog in the end, even thought it very hard to decide.

We lost our dog a few years ago he was 13 and had problems , but one say he was just being sick and not moving and sleeping, even thought he seemed ok in hisself it just the way he was nothing could keep him down,he wasnt eating or drinking so we took him to the vet adn straight away he said it didnt look good, and he predicited what was wrong with him, but we couldnt go off what he predicted so went with the xrays to confirm what was wrong, when we got the phone call we found out there was loads of problems cancers, cyst, something wrong with his heart and lungs, so we decided to put him to sleep there and then. as he was suffereing,

My brother wasnt very happy as our dog did seem happy but that was his brain not his body and we could just let him suffer and die as he wasnt eating so he was starving himself, and like my mum said she doesnt care what people say if someone has cancer they are in pain ,and if our dog had it he had to be in pain as he didnt have any med to take the pain away, so it was the best decision in the end, for the health of my dog not to suffer at all.

If you dog isnt going to get any better and they have tried treatment you have to think about your dog, you can let your dog be at home with you and then pass away but it still wouldnt be fair if you dog is in pain.

  20. I would take her to another vet if the current one has made a diagnosis without any tests.  As far as being able to tell if she is in pain, there is no way to truly know.  Some dogs tolerate pain better than others and will hide the fact that they are hurting as a survival means.  In the wild, a dog that shows pain or weekness is usually killed by others, so they develope "very thick skin".  All in all, you know your pet's mental state better than anyone else.  But, no, they can not put your dog to sleep without your permission.

  21. just have the dog put down.be fair on the dog and stop making it suffer.

  22. no they cannot but you should really consider why it's beneficial to your animal because vets don't make that recommendation lightly.

i know it sucks and it's painful but it's also selfish to keep a dog around because you can't bare the loss. you have to consider the quality of life for your beloved pet!

trust me, it ripped my heart right out of my body to put my beloved rex down but in the end, it was better then looking at him knowing he was suffering.

  23. i am not aware that they can put your dog down without your permission. however i can understand where your coming from not wanting to let go of your dog but i do think your being very very cruel keeping your dog when the vet has said that it would be in the best interest's of your dog to have it put down. i do think what your doing is very very selfish. i know that may not be what you want to hear but its true.

  24. No they can't do it without your permission but why would you be so cruel to your dog?  If the vet wants to put him down then he is either suffering and in pain or there is no hope for him and he'll die anyway.

Put your dog out of his misery, because at this point you are only keeping him alive for your own selfish reasons.

Trust me when I say I'm not being mean or heartless, I've been in your position and when the vet said my cat was suffering and there's nothing more they could do and it would be kinder to put her down, I wanted to take her and run and hide and not let them do it, but I would have only been selfish, I would have been keeping her alive for me not her and I did the kindest thing I could because I loved her, I put her down.

If there really is no hope and your dog will eventually die and he's suffering please be kind and do the right thing for your dog.

If it's his liver then a simple blood test will determine if it's that for sure, vets don't make that recommendation lightly unless they know for a fact theres no hope.  Remember, dogs mask illness and pain very well, don't let your dog fool you in to believing he's not suffering, it's mother natures way of survival of the fittest.

    Good luck

  25. I am unsure how to answer this.  No they can't put your dog to sleep without your permission.  However you are asking them to practice medicine with one hand tied behind their back.  If you won't allow testing: xrays, ultrasound, lab work, they are having to guess at what is wrong.

I can tell you the liver does not fix itself, and your dog can't live without one.  Dogs that suffer from liver issues tend to not eat, or drink very well, sleep a lot, get very yellow whites of their eyes and yellow gum tissue.  The liver is a filter for the body, and if it can't work, toxins build up.  Sometimes a dog's organs will fail, it will suffer a stroke, seizure, heart attack, I have even seen a case where a very loving dog turned on it's owner- we think the toxins may have affected his brain and the dog was unaware of his surroundings or his actions.

Is this how you want to remember your beloved friend.

Let them do some test, give you the whole answer, then if they can't help him, you can put him to sleep knowing you did all you could and did not allow him to suffer
