When I am about to feed my dog his bowl, he jumps on the bowl even before i place it down. He already jumps on bowl even though it is in my hands and I haven't put it down.

By doing that, some of the food spills on the carpet and at one time the entire bowl splattered on carpet.

How can I teach my dog to just have few seconds of patience?

  1. Train him to sit for food, or treats for that matter.  Have a few training sessions when he is hungry, about 10 minutes per session. Use pieces of dry dog food or small bits of dog treats. Let him know you have something for him, hold the morsel in front of him and higher than he can reach. He will wag his tail and wiggle around or whatever, but if you just stand there for a moment he will eventually sit down, looking up at you and waiting. It is natural behavior of dogs to do this. (Don't push his rear down; you want voluntary action, not forced.) The instant his butt hits the floor you say the "Sit." command, and give the treat to reinforce the behavior . Praise him "good boy".

With repetition he will catch on. And you start doing the same training when you come with the food bowl. Stand there with the bowl until he stops wiggling and sits down, then you say "Sit." and put the bowl down. If he rushes the bowl too soon, lift it back up out of his reach and stand there waiting for him to sit down again. In no time at all he will be conditioned to sit down automatically and wait while you put his bowl down for him...a better-behaved dog and no more bowls of food knocked out of your hand!

  2. train him to sit and stay.

talk to him sternly but not yelling.

hold him down and say stay, good boy stay. and place the food down and still hold him down wait a couple of seconds and say "okay" and let him go then praise him.

also train him to sit and stay and use treats.

    :)

  3. Make him say please by sitting, do not let him move until the bowl is placed on the floor.

  4. Take it back.  Don't let him have the bowl unless he can behave.  I would start by practicing with the bowl empty.  When you start to lower it, and he starts to jump, take the bowl back, use a command like "off", "settle down", or "behave"  when the dog settles down, say "good boy" and try again.  He doesn't get the bowl until he can behave, even if it takes you several times of doing this until he learns what you want from him.  You have to show him which behaviors you allow, and which ones you do not allow, and remember to praise the behavior you want.  You can practice this also when you give him a treat.  If he tries to grab the treat, take the treat back, as many times as it takes until he can take the treat "gently"  You don't reward bad behavior.

  5. Train him to sit and wait until you place the bowl on the floor.

Do not let him eat until he looked at you for 5 seconds.

This will teach him not only patience but also to show him that you are the boss.

(to teach him how to wait,

just build up the time each day, start with 5 seconds, if he didnt wait then just start again (by that I mean, put him back in the place where you left him without saying anything.) Do NOT give him treat until he completed the task that you set him.)

  6. Start and continue practicing NILF (Nothing in Life is Free) training in all aspects of life. Before he gets his food or has his leash put on, he needs to sit and be polite. If he gets up and goes for the food before you say "OK" he won't get what he wants.

  7. AnswersTV.com has a pretty good pet channel thats worth a look to help combat this bad habit your dog has acquired

  8. Teach him to sit when you give him the bowl and when he doesn't dont give him the bowl
