So, without crating, or tieing our dog up, how do we get her to stay in the back of a truck? She jumps out when we get on the free way. no worries, only did that once, but stills its a major problem.

  1. i just wouldn't do it

  2. In California its THE Law to tie them up if they are in the back of a truck.  Then put him in the cab with you or leave the dog at home!

I have to tie my dog up..he loves the ride. And after his bath he heads for the truck to get air dried.

He is almost 10 months and 120lbs.

  3. that is veeerrryyyyy dangerous do not let it do that either trian her to stay there or keep her on you knee in the truck

  4. Why not crate the dog or just bring her in the truck with you, duh.

  5. Try riding with her a couple of times. Show her that it's not a punishment. Then test her "very slowly" around your neighborhood where you can maintain a slow speed and keep check on her and the surroundings.

My dogs love riding in the back of my truck. They like to ham it up for the other drivers.

  6. ....You don't you put her in the cabin with you or you leave her at home. in most states it is now illegal to transport your dog in the back of the truck, crated, tied or otherwise. What happen if you get in a wreck? Rather than have the protecting of the truck cab she is gonna get tossed right into something.

  7. If you loved the dog you wouldn't chance this.  All it could take is once to kill her...................I hope it doesn't. Put her in front or leave her home.

  8. No matter how well the trained the animal is, there is still a chance it will jump out. I wouldn't risk it. My neighbor's dog was 5 and had always rode in the back with no problem. Last month something caught his eye and he jumped out and died. It was the first time he had ever jumped. Sad story hey?

  9. My dog jumped out of the window in the back seat while I was driving and it scared me to death. Luckily, he just escaped with some raw places on his leg and face. He was very leary of getting in the car for a while and we only put the window half down for a while. Now we trust him and thats not a problem anymore. But I would def. worry if he jumped out of the back of the truck and you were on a free way....I don't know how you can keep him in there without tying him unless he learnt his lesson and won't try it again, but I would be afraid to find out!

  10. Why can't she be crated or tied? I mean she shouldn't be tied because if she jumped she could strangle and unless you got on of those nice do crates (like for hunting dogs) in the truck it wouldn't really be safe but I don't understand why you would eliminate the 2 things that might actually help the problem. So you don't really want a solution? You want us to teach your dog through the internet to stay in the truck?

Why would you put her back there anyways? That is incredibly irresponsible.

  11. No, it is not perfectly fine. You should keep your dog in the front seat so they can be safe and secure. It only takes one quick stop or swerve for your pet to fly out of the back of an open truck. You wouldn't let your child slip around in the back of an open truck would you? Of course not, it is against the law.  It should be a law as well, but for now you should have enough common sense to realize that it is not safe.  Put her in the front seat with you!!!

  12. You cant train a dog to "stay" in the back of a truck.  Even a well-trained dog will jump out.

Besides.. its not safe.  If you had to make a suddun stop or you were invovlded in a wreck, your dog would be thrown from the truck.

In many areas, its illegal to have your dog ride loose in the bed.

Put your dog in the cab, or secure a crate in the bed and put her in that.

  13. DO NOT LET YOUR DOG RIDE IN THE BACK OF THE TRUCK FOR NO REASON,.YES I AM YELLING.yes it is horrible, a few yrs ago a dog jumped from the back of a truck the owner stopped ran to get him and they both died, hit by cars. Would you let your 4 yr old ride in the back of your truck unsupervised and not restrained?? no I don't think so , and you credit a dog with having more intelligence than a 4 yr old child???I don't think so. Dogs cannot defy the law of gravity or centrifugal force any more than a child or you could. How can you love your dog and put his life in such danger? I will never understand any one letting a dog to ride free in the back of a truck. may be it makes the owner feel macho , until the dog falls to its death causing another accident when the car behind has to try to not hit the dog. And possibly causing a death in the car behind the falling dog. Use common sense about this. I am 59 and have always been against this practice. I love my dogs too much to put them in danger like this.

If you could hear me I would be screaming all of this, makes me maddddddddd!!!

  14. You either let the dog ride in the cab, crate her in the back, or risk ending up with a dead dog.

Keep letting a dog ride unrestrained in a pickup truck bed, and that's what will happen, sooner or later. Whether she jumps out, falls out, or gets killed in a wreck, she'll likely end up dead.  Or seriously injured.

Injuries sustained when dogs (and people) slide across the asphalt at high speeds are very painful, slow to heal and tend to make the entire injury area look like hamburger meat.  Ever hear of a "de-gloving injury"?  It's where the flesh peels off a limb, inside-out.  Very common in road-related injuries, both in human accident victims (esp. motorcycle drivers) and dogs who fall/jump out of pickup trucks.

ADD:  And yes, it is "horrible".  Unsafe, not only to the dog, but to other motorists....a loose dog on the freeway can cause accidents, and your dog would end up being a projectile that could injure someone in the event of a wreck.  Thats why most states have OUTLAWED this practice.

Your dog already jumped out ONCE....ON THE FREEWAY.  Pure luck is the only reason she's still alive.  And yet, you're foolish enough to keep doing it.  Most folks with an ounce of concern for their dog would be horrified at their mistake and figure out a way to make sure it never happened again.  Crates or specially designed restraints aren't perfect, but they are a much better alternative than letting her ride loose.

These are animals, not robots....you can't "train" them into perfection and this is so risky that it's not worth trusting it to "training".  A well trained dog could still disobey his training at times.  Even if you could "train" the dog to stay put- what happens when you have to swerve quickly to avoid a wreck, or someone runs a red light and T-bones you in traffic?  Your dog is going to be flung out of the truck.

If you care one bit about your dog's safety, either leave her home, or restrain her properly.
