My dog just got neutered today.....?

Question

And i want to know if there is ANYTHING i can do to help him not l**k his stiches. I cant get one of those cone things because i dont have the transportation. I have to watch him. About how long will it take for the stiches to dissolve ?

it should only be a few days.  my dogs didn't really care to bother with the incision.

i know it sounds bad, but my dog said to give them benedryl if they're trying to be to active or bothering with the stitches after surgery...  i didn't need to - BUT i have given them benedryl on long car or airplane trips and they were just fine.

they get a higher dose than humans... it goes by weight.

the vet should have given you a bottle of stuff that tastes disgusting to put on his stitches so he doesnt l**k them

he can l**k them, dogs do it to heal, just keep an eye on him and dont allow excessive l*****g or chewing :P

to the guy who's against animal sterilization... you are ignorant.

i work at a welfare organisation and if you took the time to visit all these abandoned animals you'll see that every responsible owner should have their pets neutered.

there are too many hungry homeless animals in the world. ps don't buy animals from unlisenced breeders. rather adopt at ur local animal welfare.

oh and what ever you choose to do ( get a coller or other ) please do it soon for your dogs sake. my kitty licked hers open now its taken longer to heal and a scab formed ( wich means some stiches are stuck in the scab and cant be taken out until it heals )

if it's a transportation thing, then could you ask a parent to take you? I don't think l*****g will hurt them though. I had my dogs spayed and they licked at it too, but eventually they lose interest in always l*****g there. It's just a new "feeling" to him

i just got my kitten spayed last week, so i know how you feel lol.  i ended up having to get an e-collar.  i put it on her everytime she would l**k it, leave it on for an hour, and take it off.  she stopped l*****g it after 3 days.

but at petsmart they sell something called Bitter Taste or something like that.  you put it around the incision.

or you can buy a lemon and apply the juice around the incision.

and l*****g it will NOT be ok.  it can cause infection.

i ahd the same problem. I used two methods:

You can buy special cream that is very distasteful from your vet or

Place hot chillie powder on his stiches (after consulting a vet, the do maybe a different type).. lol trust me he wont l**k there agian :)
