my dog had been fine all day. i fed him tonight a raw chicken leg bone (raw bones don't splinter). about 30 min after i fed him, he started throwing up. he's thrown up abuot 10 times in 15 minutes. first the food, then just foam/mucus. and he all of a sudden is lethargic. he was playing like usual before i fed him. the chicken leg wasn't bad meat or very old. what should i do? what caused this? i don't think he needs the emergency animal hosp yet. but i'm watching him.

  1. I agree, raw diet is not always best, in fact I've seen MANY raw fed dogs have obstructions. It's very serious that you don't ignore vomiting like this, that's the first thing that comes to my mind, and I work at an emergency vet clinic,.. get  him in!

  2. well you made your mistake when you fed it a leg bone you shouldn't do that my best bet is if you really love your dog you would take it to the vet ASAP!!!

  3. maybe because the chicken was raw.he could  have gotten a case of salmonellaa.why did'nt you atleast boil the chicken?and serve it with a cup of boiled white rice.

  4. You gave him raw chicken...  raw chicken with bones in it

Unless you have a wolf that's..

well I suppose it's your dog.

I warn you you'll have to feed your children something besides bananas and nuts though, ok?

A dog isn't the same as a fecking wolf and a child isn't the same as a fecking chimp.

    uch..

Make sure he has plenty of water and he knows it's there, between that and the throwing up he could be pretty dehydrated.

If he's not better by tomorrow you really should take him to a vet, if not today.

  5. Dogs do just get sick sometimes. If you're a member of raw feeding on yahoo got post this there and see if any of the late nighters are on.

If he didn't puke anything else up then there wasn't something else in his stomach. Give him plenty of water and keep watching him. Its possible he could have been sick from something else he got into and food in his stomach agitated it. Honestly I am stumped and if all else fails call your e -vet as see what they think.

Michi - the dog has been on raw for awhile. Raw bones are perfectly safe.

  6. I think it's because it was raw.  Dogs might not be as resistant to salmonella as we think.

But maybe you shouldn't feed your dog bones in general since they're pretty dangerous. Especially if the dog cracks the bone in their mouth and swallows it.

And yeah, if this kind of behavior continues, you should take your dog to a vet.  They might actually be sick or it could be salmonella poisoning.

  7. It may not be such a good idea to feed him raw meat. It isn't standard practice to feed a dog raw meat. They have dog food that is tasty and very nutritious for them. Your dog may have a sensitive stomach to the bacteria in raw meat. And if I remember correctly, there are possible parasites in raw pork that can make us sick if it's under cooked, so it can definitely bother the dog. Unless your vet told you to feed your dog raw meat, I would stop and switch to dog food. If your dog id throwing up and having diarrhea after eating it, you have your answer. It doesn't agree with him. Wild dogs eat raw meat, but that meat is from a fresh kill and wild animals don't have all the antibiotics and preservatives human-raised animals have. Pork can give them worms. That can cause them to throw up and have diarrhea. Call your vet and tell them the entire story and they may want to check your dog out to rule anything else out.

  8. Dogs bury bones and eat them weeks later, meat and all. He wouldn't have got sick from old chicken anyways.

It just sounds like he's just sick.

Sometimes people just throw up....so i'd assume it is the same.

Keep an eye on him and if he gets worse i'd take him to the animal hospital.

I'm sure he will be fine.

edit: Are these people serious? Don't give dogs bones? Dogs needs bones to clean their teeth. Yes there are diff between WOLVES and pet dogs..but there are wild dogs that aren't wolves.

Do these people think these wild dogs stop into a cafe and buy cookd rice and cooked chicken for dinner? I highly doubt that.

  9. How long have you been doing the raw diet? Where do you get your meat? You do need to freeze you meat before feeding it to kill as much bacteria as possible from the meat processing. Are you buying your own meat or using a pre made raw/frozen diet? How old is the dog. With any raw diet there is a transition period where diarrhea is normal while the body adapts to the diet.

Make sure the dog drinks some water to prevent dehydration and check his gum color. If his gums are healthy and pink, keep an eye on him. If his gums are pale or very white, I would go to the emergency clinic.

  10. If his vomit is yellow-ish, call the vet immedietly. My puppy died of parvo tuesday, those symp.'s sound just like him.

  11. It's possible that the chicken bone got stuck in his throat. At least call the emergency vet and get their advice.

  12. Has he been wormed lately?

  13. First, make sure your dog's not counter-surfing, raiding the trash, or somehow eating things he shouldn't be. If not, there are many other possible causes.

About your dog's raw food diet, I think several are quite into it. I just think i must refer you to this site for some information about raw food diet.

  14. My dog started doing that. We found out that he had Colitis. He could only eat certain dog foods. call your vet about that. Dogs also shouldn't have table scraps. Some of the stuff could be bad for them. When he is throwing up be calm and sit or stand next to him. Pet him and let him know that its ok.
