  1. prong collar

  2. Gentle leader.

These are safer better collars to use

  3. the prong collar you refer to is also called a pinch collar.

I use them to help lead train on my G.S.D.s they do not do any harm because as soon as the dog starts to pull it presses against the neck and they slow down to the pace you are walking at.

  4. Why not just invest in some proper training? Honestly, a collar is a tool - if you remove it the dog will go right back to pulling. Some collars can even do some damage if not used properly (chokers can crush windpipes or strangle the dog, Prongs can cause little holes, and yes, the Illusion collar which is similar to the choker.)

Your best bet is to just use a regular collar. When the dog pulls, you stop. If the dog continues to pull then turn around and go in the other direction for a minute or two. The dog will quickly learn that pulling gets him no where.

If you don't want to take the time to properly train the dog then at least take the time to learn how to use any tool correctly. As i said above, any tool can hurt your dog when used incorrectly. Have a professional show you how to fit and use one.

  5. Just use a regular leash backwards like Ceasar does and put it at the top of his neck.  I have used this on my dog and it works great.  It works kind of like a choke chain because when the dog pulls it tightens.

  6. I would take him to some obedience classes.  There they teach you how to train your dog.

For me I would use the old fashioned choke chain.  But you need to know how to use it.  There is a proper way to put it on & ways to correct any walking issue.  If you don't know how to use it, learn how to.

The link I am sending is all on how to use a choke chain.

Pulling a head shows that the dog is more dominate than you.  You need to teach him to walk beside you at a 'heel'.  Or just behind you on your left side.

  7. i have just looked up those illusion collars and they look brilliant, in fact im off to buy one now they look great

  8. You could use a choke chain which isn't as brutal as it sounds, it relaxes when he walks near you and tightens when he pulls, they soon learn its more pleasant .Praise him when he walks with you, also talk to him, even if its meaningless natter, dogs love the attention. But use the choke chain anyway.

  9. None of those!

Use a harness, please. That way you can pull him back without him choking.

  10. Better than a fancy collar it just patience.  Every time your dog pulls make them stop and wait.  It will be slow and tedious you may have to stop every single step you take but eventually they will learn and they you will have a better trained dog instead of a $30 collar that could damage your dog windpipe.

  11. hate to see people use the prong or choke collars that don't know how to use.

if the gentle leader is fitted, i've never seen it leave marks or the dog to keep pulling after working with it.

think you need to work more with him.

  12. The type of collar is not as critical as the training - teach your dog not to pull when walking - - -

Use any collar you have - and as soon as the dog gets more than a couple of inches in front of you, pull him back.  If he doesn't respond, turn and walk the other way.  Eventually the dog will start to pay attention to you since he does not know where you will be going.

As to your question, I do not encourage the use of a prong collar for any circumstance.  Too often, if the dog really wants to pull, they will, regardless of the collar.  And a sudden pull on the prong collar will cause serious damage to the dog.  Folks may say the dog will not pull on a prong, however, I've seen too many dogs in the vets because they did pull or a sudden jerk and the prongs did major damage to the dog's neck.

I have used Illusion collars, which do work during the training classes I teach - However, make sure you have someone who knows how to use them show you.  These are very effective, but need to have a proper use to work right.

  13. My Akita ( very large dog ) used to pull me but I easily got him to stop and now he walks behind me even when off lead. It's easier than you think to stop the problem.

When you notice the dog walking in front say Shhhh NO!  Bit like the dog whisperer.  Then get your dog to sit and say stay.  You move forward when your dog moves straight away say back and pull gently on the lead.  Everytime your dog get's in front stop it, make it sit and repeat.  After a while they get so fed up of being told to sit they just walk behind you.  Always say BACK.  Then everytime you say BACK they just do there as they have learned the signal.
