Question:

My dog pees in her sleep!?

my dog is a fixed 2 1/2 year old female blue heeler mix and she has a peeing problem. She pees when she meets new people sometimes, which I've seen dogs do before, but she also pees in her sleep. I've seen her pee while she was just very relaxed also. What could be wrong with her? This has been going on for quite a while.

  1. Well, I'm not exactly a genius on pets. Maybe it pees in its sleep the same way people do. You know....like some people cant feel that they need to go to the bathroom when they're sleeping. I dunno, you'd probably want to look it up or something. And if you just have no clue, there i nothing wrong with going to the vet.

  2. I would ask your vet. The peeing when she meets new people is her just getting over excited or she is nervous. But the peeing in the sleep I would ask my vet on that one I have never heard of that before.

  3. She may be incontinent.  There are medications that can help, such as Propalin or Proin.

  4. My "mommy" golden retriever, Lady Prancer....use to pee every time she saw a male......."A way of showing submissiveness".  She is no longer with us.

Your baby is only 2 1/2 years old, however you said she is spayed.  To me it is sounding like she has a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection), bladder infection, or kidney problems, possibly.  If she has a UTI, this can be painful.  The best route is to have her checked by the Vet.

  5. That sounds hilarious but also troublesome XDDDDD Ask your vet.

  6. Urinary incontinence is treatable with daily medicine.  The best one out there in my opinion is Proin (phenylpropanolamine hcl).

  7. Urinating when a dog meets someone new is submissive behavior. That is your dog's way of letting the new person know that she is submissive to them.

Urinating when she sleeps - I would restrict her water intake for several hours before bedtime (assuming regular bedtimes). Take her out to use the bathroom immediately before bed.

Urinating when she is around the house - make sure you are offering her ample opportunities to use the bathroom outside.

If all these conditions are met and you still have problems, consult your vet.

  8. the peeing when she meets people coud be caused by stranger anxiety.

the peeing for everything else  can  be treated by medication administered by your veterinarian

  9. Your dog is haveing a bladder problem get her to the vet most of the time it can be treated. Its also possible she has an infection that needs to be looked into.At any rate this is a problem only a vet can help her with.Good Luck.Tilks Mom

  10. TKS and Lisa W are right on.

This isn't an uncommon problem, in fact it's typically seen in altered females.

Make an appointment with your vet so he can exam her and discuss the options.

  11. She may have a weak bladder, or possibly bladder incontinence...she is kinda young though.

Definately take her into the vet, they may need to run some bloodwork to check her internal organs, but it may be something that can be treated with medication.
