My dogs have taken up digging under the deck stairs. ?

They are hot and looking for a cool place to lay down. The fresh earth is cooling to their skin.

Give them a cooler place to hang out. Obviously it is too hot being outdoors during the day.

Jane answered with the most likely answer.  The area is shaded, digging into the ground provides more comfort and being dogs decided that it is great fun besides.

You can use deterrents to keep the dogs from further using that area, but if an area is not provided that meets their needs they will more than likely just find another area to dig. You could consider putting a kiddy pool out for their use, but you will likely need to accompany them outside for a bit because they will continue practicing their new found "hobby" unless distracted away from digging.

i know this will sound crazy but i can guarantee it works.  take some of the dogs p**p and put it in the hole and leave it uncovered for a couple days then fill in hole with p**p in it, the dog will not dig there agin.  i have suggested this to others on Y? and they have contacted me telling me it worked.  i got it from the breeder of my Mastiffs, they can dig BIG!!!! holes and it always worked.   dogs don't like to mess where they sleep so that may have something to do with it.

Dig a 1 foot trench under stairs, put a row of bricks in it, place lattice on top & fill with dirt to cover.
