Question:

My dogs "pinkie toe" is hurting her. Should I take her to the vet?

Yesterday I saw that my dog was limping and occasionally lifting her back leg and not walking on it. So I felt her leg and didn't feel anything out of place. I lifted each of her toes and her last toe when I lifted it I knew that was the thing that was hurting her.

My boyfriend said that on Thursday or Friday she made a mega jump to catch a football. He said it was the highest she's ever jumped and she was several feet off the ground (she's an australian cattle dog and catches frisbees mid-air a lot) so I assume that she landed on it wrong.

We were thinking of taking her to the vet tomorrow or Tues if isn't better, but should we? What will they do if she sprained her toe? I know for humans all you do is tape it up... I would hate to spend a lot of money if they are going to do something I can do at home.

She's still running around (more than she should be) but I figure it's because she's bred to be a working dog... am I right?

Any help or advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  1. You will not know what the problem is unless you take her to the vet, who will probably x-ray it. Yes, it could be a sprain, but what if it is broken? Gets infected? Need I go on. I think that if you ask should you take her then you already know that you should. I consider the cost of a vet worth the well being and health of my pets. That way I know that they will be with me and love me as much as I love them for as long as possible. Please, take her and spend the money to make sure she is ok. It is better than the alternative.

  2. Alot of dogs are bred not to show pain.  Put some ice on it, till' you go to the vet.
