My downloaded movies don't have sound when i play them using my macbook

When i play a movie using quicktime all i get is the video image and no audio. Before i had nothing at all but i downloaded an xvid codec to make the image appear. All my movie files are in avi format

.avi is primarily a windows format, so try using realplayer for mac that should do the trick
