My dr. put me on provera, does this prevent pregnancy?

I have not had a natural period since the beginning of march. Thinking that I might be pregnant, I was not worried. In June i went to see my dr. and she put me on provera,(which is a hormone pill used to regulate the menstrual cycle) for 10 days. At the beginning of June i had my period, now it is the middle of August and I have not had my period yet. My boyfriend and I have taken 5 pregnancy test, and they all were negative. I am really nervous because provera is not to be taken if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. I have not had any abdominal or back pain or had any pregnancy symptoms. What is the problem?

  1. You would have to be on provera for a longer time and in late pregnancy for it to have any really adverse reactions. Also provera is only used to induce a bleed. It is progesterone which is a hormone your body makes before your period the withdraw from the hormone makes you have a period and if you become pregnant that is the hormone that doesn't go away until your 3rd month or so of pregnancy. Progesterone also keeps you from miscarrying. Provera does not in anyway prevent pregnancy. And if you are pregnant when you take it, it will not make you bleed or anything. It will be fine.

  2. your boyfriend    perform like a trucker get away from dock before dumping the load

  3. Provera does not prevent pregnancy.  It causes your body to think that you ovulated which then brings on menstruation.  Taking Provera once for ten days will not bring on your period every month.  You have to take it every month.

  4. you should not be taking provera if you are trying to get pregnant. If you need to take provera then you should make sure that you use protection during s*x. ingestion of provera during the early stages of pregnancy can cause fetal harm. You need to discuss this matter with your Dr and come up with a treatment plan that is in line with your goals.

Why should Provera not be prescribed?

Provera should never be taken during pregnancy. Avoid it if you even suspect you're pregnant. Doctors once prescribed Provera as a test for pregnancy, but no longer do so for 2 reasons:

Quicker, safer pregnancy tests are now available.

If you are in fact pregnant, Provera might injure the baby.
