I have been volunteering at the zoo for the past 3 years. I run a program called OPBBS which I am trying to make into a non-profit organization (our web is http://opbbs.weebly.com) I have a passion for artic animals, (wolves, polar bears, and penguins mainly) I really want to create a shelter to rehabilatate arctic animals (orphans, injured, etc) and return them to the wild. I am only 14 but, I want to start working towards it as soon as possible. Any suggestions? What classes should I take, etc.

  1. I don't really have any advice. I mean all I can say is take a lot of Biology probably? I don't know really. I just wanted to say that I think your dream is really awsome, and don't let anything stand in your way of achieving it!

  2. i really want to own a company too which looks after any type of animals. but mainly endangered ones. apparently you have to be well off the start a company though. look at my endangered animals question and help me on that please :D

  3. You will presumably want to become a veterinarian, so start with that assumption, look to your local universities that offer a veterinary college, get their course catalog and admissions standards, and work backwards from there, to see all that you need.

Our local University that offers Veterinary college requires a 3 year general science degree, with biology, genetics, microbiology, biophysics, biochemistry, statistics. All of those have to be B or better to be considered, and there is a waiting list so not everyone with a straight B gets in. Reality is that most that get in have A+ averages on all of those core courses. I did not apply because I did have a couple Bs.

When one looks at the list of requirements, one has to track backward to find all prerequisites back to  first year in high school, But  they do not look so closely at grades attained that far back.

What having lower grades earlier can do is make it much harder to get better grades later.

  4. The veterninary classes are good suggestions if you want to work in a rehab clinic or zoo.  If you want to actually own and run a clinic, you will be doing mostly administration and fund-raising (rehab facilities can be expensive to run), therefore business administration may be another route.  You will have to learn to schmooze donors and learn how work with the public.  I would highly reccomend volunteering with your local rehab facility, especially in the spring and summer when they need extra hands.  Good luck.

  5. zoology,ecology and veterinary assistant.

  6. Biology (sciences).

You might think about becoming a vet. &  you have already started on the path you wanted by volunteering like you have been.

Have you talked with the people at the zoo? If not do & they can help steer you in the right direction.

I admire you & your dream...wishing you the best in life.  : )

  7. Take animal husbandry classes and behavioral classes as well as biology classes. Your best bet might be to become a veterinarian and specialize in arctic animals.

Good luck and I hope you realize your dream.
