ok so for various reason which i dont care to discuss because of their personal nature, i am 21 years old and do not hae my drivers liscense. i havea few friends whom im pretty sure would help me try to get my liscense but as for me its been a while sine ive practiced driving and i dont know completely how to drive a stick yet. im in the state of virginia if that makes any difference. my question is, what do i do? am i too old to where i couldnt pay someone professionally at the dmv for lessons or how does that work? because i really have no idea. what are the steps that i would have to go through in order to get my license?

i can only ask that any replies to this message be seriosu and respectful to me please. also what fees would i have to pay for tests and such?

  1. lots of people with licenses don't know how to drive, i see them on the road everyday :) if you are really nervous, call an insurance company and they can usually get you in touch with a driving instructor--or look in the yellow pages. I believe AAA does this too...(this also lowers you insurance rates upon completetion).  go to the dmv and they'll guide you through your proceedures of getting your permit and then you can practice with the instructor and then in about 6 months you can take the driving test.  if you fail it, all well, wait a month and do it again. it's no biggie.

  2. You are never too old for driving school.  First step is getting your learner's permit.  You may want to study a little bit before taking the test so you will pass.  Then once you get your permit anyone who has a license can teach you, but if you prefer you can pay for driving lessons.  You don't have to drive that well to get your license, I actually didn't really learn to drive until long after I got my license.  It's easier once the pressure is off and you start to get more comfortable, and when you can drive on your own without a licensed driver correcting everything you do.

  3. It's kind of scary that another poster said he/she didn't drive too well at the time he/she received his/her license.

Anyway, you're not too old to get driving lessons.  Check the phone book for some local driving schools.  Student drivers don't have to be school-student age.  Why do you have to drive a stick (manual) car?  Does Virginia require you to drive a manual car on your driving test?  If not, you're better off with an automatic.  The DMV can provide you with information you'll need to study for the written exam.  I believe all states require both a written and driving exam.  Good luck.  Remember to pay attention to everything around you when you're driving (and don't get distracted with the radio, cell phone or others in the car!)
