My driving test is in 2 weeks and my reversing is horrible! Please help?!?

Just a little while ago before it rained my uncle and dad were attempting to teach me how to reverse into these two cones in our curvy driveway.

I find it so confusing about "locking" and "straightening the wheel".

Can anyone give some key tips when it comes to reversing?...

My neck hurts....I guess I have been looking too much in the back...but the side mirrors are confusing to use!

I also find it hard to reverse in a straight line.Which I heard is key on the test.

  1. Just try to relax and don't turn the wheel too much. When going backwards it takes less of a turn of the wheel to turn the car, that is why you are prolly over steering.

  2. The best way to learn this,is to get a job delivering pizza's...I learned how to drive in reverse several blocks when I delivered pizza,or you can practice in a empty parking lot at night,go around the parking lot poles several times nightly....whatever way you want to go with it,good luck

  3. Locking the wheel it is when you take the keys out. Straightening the whel is just that. One thing on any driving test is parallel parking. Measure a space around a parking meter (the painted stalls) then place cones those distances in front of your house and practice. Learn to line up key points on you car to fixed points to turn into place. Like my mom always said if you can't parallel park a car you don't know how to drive. This is hard but if you don't learn it you be banging up cars getting tickets etc. driving up insurance also. It is better to practice in a bigger car then test in a smaller car.

  4. Practice is all I can tell you to do. If you practice everyday for 2 weeks you should be ready for the test by then. If not you really shoudn't be on the road until you know how to drive the car while backing up. It's just not safe for other drivers on the road.

  5. Find a large empty parking lot.

(Try school parking lots on Sunday for example.)

Spend 2 hours backing up.  Do figure 8'sm straight runs, etc.   Do it with your Mom (not your father or uncle) and ask her to just let you figure it out.   Start out slowly and only increase speed as your competence and confidence increases.

    You can do this.

  6. Well when in reverse, put your hand on the back of the passenger seat & look over my shoulder.  You have better control in reverse.

Turn the wheel based on where the rear end of the car is.

Turn it right, the rear end turns right.

  7. You obviously don't sound ready for your test, so why did you book it?

You have 2 weeks to perfect your technique, good luck.

  8. it sounds like your not ready to drive. please stay off the roads until your able to property control a motor vehicle( I for one would like to live longer). Do not be embarrassed , it takes longer for some people and some never are able to drive properly(this is a major cause of traffic fatality's in american).

  9. Practice. Really, it will help. I could also see your father and uncle maybe making your practice with the cones too difficult. Start out easy and work up to something more hard. Also, as odd as this is. Consider getting a bicycle helmet with the rear view mirrors attached, this might help you associate what you are seeing through the mirror. Just a thought.

Hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!

  10. Sure, First, take the cones away as they are unnecessary at this point.

Your problem is not the steering wheel. It's your spatial relationship to the vehicle.

Start practicing regular 'ol backing up (no cones). use a vacant parking lot or parking garage. I mean seriously how often are you going to back into an incline? That just makes it worse and harder to learn.  This will help you get used to using your mirrors and getting a "zen" for the automobile. Just practice simply, backing in to one spot, putting it into park. then just take a few breaths. if you want examine how well you pulled in straight. Do some straightening out if need be. Pull out do a circle around the lot, block and then do it again.

When you feel more confident about the mirrors and the car, put the cones back.
