Question:

My duck keeps falling down is he sick?

I have a pekin duck who keeps falling down. I feed him corn chops. I recently noticed he sits for most of the day at the top of the hill. When we caught him his under belly feathers were wet. He falls beak first into the ground and it takes him 10 seconds to get up. Is he sick. What should I do. I am worried.

Thanks

  1. Maybe his legs are too weak or he's too heavy to support himself, or he could have injured his leg and the pain causes him to just fall

  2. Personally I think it is down to poor nutrition and a bad diet which is making him weak . . hence, he cant stand up for long

he could even be anaemic. .

why on earth are you feeding him "corn chops" I don't even know what they are anyway

But you do NOT give them to ducks not as their staple diet anyway. .

change your duck onto a food like cracked corn . .  Or pellets or even mash and also lots of fresh veggies also grit and oyster shell (ground up obv)

and keep her in her coop (which he/she should have ) nice and warm with fresh water (not too much)

This should help him/her regain some strength

if he/she suddenyl gets worse or just doesn't improve

    Go to a vet. . .

How old is the duck also?

I am assuming fully grown because ducklings don't have feathers yet?

    Hope i helped you.

    Good luck with the duck

  3. it may mean, like you said that he is sick or he has a broken leg you should check with a nearby vet!!

he/she might have problems on the inside of his body or he could be super tired.

how long has he been falling like that??

and is he only a duckling??? or a grown duck??

  4. Poor duckie! Ask a vet. He definitely has something wrong, especially if he's falling beak first. I hope he gets better!!!

  5. hmm..pekin ducks are usually pretty versitile, they seem

to withstand alot of stuff that some exotic breeds cannot.

Since you didn't share (obviously) your location, I would

have to assume it's hot there, just as it is basically hot

everywhere, given it's summer.  My only advise would be

to try to catch him again, and put him in an enclosed

location, ie a dog kennel or a small place in the barn..

(in either location make sure he has shade and a nice

    breeze if possible).

And the reason for this is to try to add some form of

electrolytes (sp?) to his water..he may just need a

bit of assistance from vitamins and minerals (provided

in this) to keep him hydrated on the inside cause sometimes

cool, clean water just isn't enough. If you are not close to

    a farmstore to buy this...simply try Gatorade..it's a close

2nd option and may be all the poor little guy needs.

Hope this helps and good luck to you and mr duck.

  6. He may have a hurt leg b/c pekins are known for getting broken legs b/c there so big.Is he eating normal? or his balance may be off check around his ears for anything out of the ordanary. If his symptons still occur take him and get him checked
