it is either defective or is not connected properly if it is connected with no cable or sattelite box it should be coax to the input and output to the tv if you have a cable or satellite if your using component (red, green, blue) make sure there not crossed it is common to cross the green and blue either on the cable or sat box or the dvd recorder if your using composite better known as rca make sure the yellow is connected to the yellow on both boxes if the connections are correct or if your using hdmi the dvd recorder is probably defective one last test would be to take connections off dvd recorder and connect directly to tv this will rule out the cable or sat box or cables
