I bought 2 brother dwarf hamsters around 6 months ago, we think that one of them has tail rot as it has a bloody and black area around its bottom! we have seperated them so it can rest, is this a good idea considering they have never been seperated, and does the sick hamser have a chance of recovering?

  1. Very Good to seperate your hammies... It may be possible That He/She has wet tail and should be treated IMMEDIATELY, even if he/she doesnt end up having wet tail it can also be used as a preventative. Also I would start both hammies on the medication to cure the sick one and prevent the healthy hamster from catching wet tail because WET TAIL IS VERY VERY CONTAGOUES. Also you shouldnt keep the cages in the same room. To further answer your question, If the sickness is not caught early and treated then NO their chances are slim. I'm Sorry for your hammie.

  2. It was wise of you to separate the dwarf hamsters to prevent any infection from spreading to the healthy one. However, once separated for more than 3 days, dwarf hamsters forget their cage mates' scent and then they are as good as strangers. You cannot put them together again since they will fight viciously. So be prepared to get a permanent cage for the second one.

Please take the sick hamster to a vet immediately. He needs antibiotics since blackness of the tail indicates that he has got a major infection inside and probably might need a small incision to get the pus drained from there (if the infection is festering)

How did he get hurt there? Did he fall down or something? My suspicion is on the other hamster. Probably they had a vicious fight and he bit the hamster on its tail badly. It is quite a possibility and I have seen that happen before. In such a case, best is to separate them permanently so you do not have another bad wound on the weaker hamster.

The sick hamster definitely has a chance of surviving provided you take him to a vet immediately. So hurry!!

  3. I am not really sure, but I would take it into the vet RIGHT away. You wouldn't want to put your hampster in danger. :-(
