Question:

My economic stimulus check was "issued" last Friday. Does that mean it was actually mailed last Friday?

It says that I should contact them after July 25th if I haven't received it. So what is the point of telling me they "issued" the check if there's a 1 month window for when I could receive it?

  1. Yes, if not Thursday night. Many who live near Austin actually get it on the Friday it's mailed. You should receive it sometime this week, although if you don't the IRS can't do anything about it until it's been at least 4 weeks from the mailing date.

  2. You'll most likely get it within a few days, but if they said to contact them if you didn't have it in a week, many impatient people would start calling in 3 days - and they are already swamped with calls right now from people who didn't bother to read the website and understand what the rules and schedules are.

If you got a letter saying your check would be issued 6/27, or the where's my stimulus payment website said that, it should have been mailed by Friday so you'll most likely see it early this week.

  3. Because the government runs the USPS and they lose stuff. Ever heard the expression "good enough for government work"?

  4. The IRS has no control over the Postal Service.  Once your check is in the mail, it's out of the IRS' hands.  Literally.
