  1. I assume  edtv is hdtv!!!

    DVD is 480

HD DVD or Blu-ray are 1080

The 360 can only play DVD 480, unless you have the HD DVD 1080 drive attachment, regardless, the format or resolution of the movie to began with is all it will ever be. If you have saved a movie onto the hard drive that is in 720p (I have never heard of them) but your 360 does have 1080i output through the green, blue, and red cords. In other words, if you have a 720p movie saved on the hard drive, then it will play it as 720p, but a DVD is 480 and will play as 480.

the i means the screenshot is scanned once per picture frame and the p means it is scanned twice per picture frame and results as two picture frames that is so fast it appears as one too the human eye.

Now if you use only the solid yellow video plug, then 480 is all it will be, you have a setting switch on the 360 cable on the back for HDTV or TV, the HDTV setting is for the red, green, and blue cords, while the TV setting is the Solid Yellow plug for video. The small red and white are for audio.

  2. The native resolution of an EDTV is 480p, so all inputs (including 1080i) are scaled to 480p.

I would set the 360 to 480p output.
