The thermostat is also broken. I get some cold air but not nearly enough. What are some potential reasons this is occuring and how can I fix it?

  1. Run your blower by itself for 30 minutes. Then put it back to cool and see if that helps.Good luck.

  2. Check you filter if its too dirty..

Get your thermostat fixed as this controls the temperature..

    or..

Your coolant (freon) level is low.. Ask a mechanic to fill her up for you..

  3. You will save time and money by calling the A/C pro since you do not have access to the tools and equipment to make proper repairs!

  4. Not providing enough cold air is a problem that is occuring more and more as our climate gets warmer and warmer. Higher electric bills means your unit is taking longer to cool your home. The thermostat must be working if the unit is still running. Do you mean it is just cosmetically broken or is it just hanging off the wall? Most times when a unit is not providing enough cold air it is due to poor maintenance. Dirty fillters, low freon charge, no maintenance performed. I would suggest having a licensed technician look at your system. A good place to start is with this free referral service that has a list of background checked contractors in your area. Why is my heart broken?

  5. One or two of the following could be the cause:

    1. Broken thermostat- does this means you cannot rotate it? If not it    could be set low before it is broken. Replace the k**b and try to rotate it to a higher setting.

    2. Air filter- is it dirty? Is it blocking the flow of air? Remove and wash with soap and water.

    3. Low refrigerant content. Measure the load current. If lower than specified in the nameplate, add refrigerant.

4.Leak in the refrigerant line tubing. If there's a leak, the result is number 3 above.

    5. Defective compressor.

    6. Defective filter drier.

    7. Defective expansion valve.

    8. Defective overload relay.

    9. Is there ice forming in the evaporator coil? Then either num 6 of 7 is the cause.

    10. Is the fan rotating at its normal speed? If no, put lubricating oil in its bearing.
