  1. The usual requirement to wait for enrollment before making changes usually has exceptions for certain events, such as getting married, having children, getting divorced, etc.  In some cases, a spouse obtaining a new job and/or obtaining health insurance through one's spouse's employer qualifies as an event that allows you to make changes immediately, without waiting for the next open enrollment.

By the way, $130 is very cheap.  Please tell us where you work so that those of us paying more can get jobs there.  (Joke).

  2. depending on the size of the company, you may not be able to dis-enroll in the insurance plan.  Most company's allow you to dis-enroll during the year, but it is not widely published as allowed.  Talk to HR and ask why you cannot dis-enroll.  If they still refuse, contact the carrier/broker of the plan and confirm with them.

Some company's only terminate benefits when you leave the company, and that could be the situation you are in.

  3. Well, you need a qualifying event, or open enrollment.

Ask them for a written list of qualifying events - normally, it's birth, death, divorce, etc.   I'm not sure your spouse getting a new job qualifies.

  4. Because....that is the contract with the insurance company.
